I’m after some advice! how to start logging cycling workouts

Hi guys…

I’m after some advice! I’m very new to Garmin connect and so far loving it!!! I’m now running 5 K at least 4 times a week, keeping my steeps up – feeling good and progressing from couch potato to someone doing an activity every day.

My current training is as follows…

I log my steps, sleep etc… with Vivofit
I run outside and use a Forerunner 10 to log my runs.
I do cardio work outs and use my Vivofit with heart rate monitor to log these workouts.
I do interval training on a tread mill and use my Vivofit with heart rate monitor to log these workouts.

Now I want to add cycling to my activities – but I’m puzzled how to do this using my excisting Garmin products - or is there an App i could use on my phone to log distance / time etc.. is there an App I can use and it show up on Garmin connect.

If no App I think I need to use my Vivofit with heart rate monitor to log these workouts.

Appreciate any advice / help / suggestions from you guys on how to improve my use of Garmin connect and therefore improve my training.
  • For an app, try Wahoo Fitness in the Play Store and the Apple App store. It's free, supports GPS, ANT+ HRM, supports multiple types of activities, and shares results with Connect and other similar websites. I use it for certain activities. I also use Strava but I sync data from Connect to Strava but you should be able to go the other way. I also have Crank for cycling but it doesn't sync with Connect so I don't use it.

However, while cycling, I like to see my time in the activity, speed, and distance and other stats as I go. I use my Forerunner 305 on my handlebars as a cycling computer and sync that data.

The Forerunner 10 should work fine for biking. Like pshare I use my Forerunner 305 strapped to my handlebars when riding. I use electrical tape to tape foam pipe insulation cut to the width of the watch as a handlebar mount on all my bikes. Works perfectly.
  • Yes, the FR10 should work fine for cycling but with certain limitations.

    1. You won't be able to connect to a cadence sensor.
    2. The activity will will appear in Connect as Running but you can change it after.
    3. I have a different display setup on my FR305 for Cycling. For example, for Running, I have Pace showing but for Cycling, I have Speed.
