Which Calories are "correct"

The Calories and Total distance is being reported differently between the Vivosmart band, Dashboard "Steps" Widget, Daily Summary Page and Reports - Total Calories.

For example, right now:

Vivosmart: 1483 Calories, 3.52 Mi
Dashboard "Steps" Web: 1483 Calories, 3.5Mi
Connect App "Steps" page: 1483 Calories, 3.5 Mi
Connect Web "Steps" Page (Daily Summary): 1695 Calories, 3.6 Mi
Connect Reports - Total Calories: 1695 Calories

I just synched, and am sitting at my computer. The values on the band, web page or mobile app have not changed.

So which one is right?

I get that this is just for reference, and have read all of the "Activity Tracker Accuracy" disclaimers. So my question is not "How many calories have I actually burned?", but "Why are there two different numbers for the same metric on the same application?
  • They all look close enough. If you are trying to loose weight, use the lower value. If you are trying to gain weight, use the higher value.

Differences in Calorie values depend a lot on whether they were taken from the accumulated value on your device or where re-calculated from other data.

    Hmmm...

I just went through previous days. They are all off. The closest is 70, but a few days are off by over a thousand. So I'm going to guess this is a bug. Kind of like how each day, if I add up the 15-minute step count in the "Step Details" page, it's consistently off by 10,000 or more. Yesterday, I only had 5300 steps for the day. But somehow at noon I had 18,000 steps. I really like the band. The software is flakey. Again. I don't take what the band says literally, as in I walked exactly that many steps, or burned that many calories. But if I am supposed to be interested in this data as a reference in an attempt to try to be more healthy, it would be nice if the data was displayed consistently.
  • Massaging the data to make it look more consistent would give the impression of "accuracy" but then you would be less likely to know when something is really wrong with your device and the data it's collecting.

Assuming you are talking about the vivofit or such, you should probably ask in one of the vivo forums to see what others are getting. Garmin Support might also answer your questions if you call them.
