Manual Sync activity to Training Peaks/Strava

Hi,

I’m a regular user of Garmin Connect, Strava and Training Peaks. Normally I will upload my activity from my Garmin to Garmin Connect and then sync it to Strava and Training Peaks once I have named the activity and usually added some small description in the description box.

I think the auto sync to strava and Training peaks is a great idea but the reason I don’t use it is that it sync’s instantly before I have had the chance to add any details. I currently use Tapiriik for this reason as it allows me to control when an item is uploaded to the other sites. However, taking cognisance of the fact that it is run by one guy who obviously gives a lot of time and resource to provide a service that is probably becoming less in demand as the sync option becomes available, I think Garmin should do something to seriously consider addressing this sync issue.

Ideally I would like to see a sync button added to Connect (both online and on the mobile app), however, barring this it would be nice if there could be some delay function added such as ‘don’t upload for x minutes after sync to GC’ or better yet, do not sync until edited (so you could go in, add a title and description then click save) and then the activity would be sync’d.

Does anyone else feel this would be a useful addition. It is the main reason I Don’t link my garmin and Strava ccounts which is a shame as it means I cant use the live segments feature for example on the new Garmin 520 which slightly erodes the point of buying one (see Garmin, this could be costing you money;) )

Cheers,

Tom
  • Yours is a valid comment for sure.I am still synced between Connect & Strava. However, it means going back into Strava and fixing what I just did in Connect.

What I started to do is to leave it for a few days and then fix a batch of activities on Strava in batch mode.

I don't think a programmed delay is going to work unless it is done only at the end of a day. Some people sync but don't really adjust the activity until hours or days later. I don't have a better idea though except for a button to initiate the transfer.

I'd welcome this feature as well, as long Garmin doesn't want to program multiple sport types in the sub 200€ sport watch range, which could be done in an afternoon by an intern. I mean all it takes is setting the workout type from default "Running" to "Cycling", which at the end sets the .fit file to proper workout type. They do support showing speed instead of pace (which could be done automatically by selecting the "Cycling" sport type), so why not just implement this, spare us the workout juggling online and get over it ?
Other sub 200€ watches are all multi sport capable already and paying 100€ extra for the 2xx series JUST for that in 2015 is a rip-off. It's a completely simple thing to implement and can be done with software. Seeing that even FR25, which shipped in August 2015 doesn't have this, explains a lot (money grab).

But that probably won't ever happen. So about the "band-aid" solution: the programmed delay could be set as "upload after x minutes after workout is synced to Garmin Connect" and could offer couple presets (30min, 1h, 1 day, like tapiirik does f.e.). Easy.
  • tdkl,

There are lots of people who would love to see that enhancement implemented. However, what I've learned is that allowing changes to the activity type may be not be a simple as it seems. Sure, biking vs. running might involve just changing pace to speed but that is the tip of the iceberg when you consider how many different activities there are to support and the different fields necessary to support them.

It can be done but not by an intern in an afternoon.
  • Well, there are tons of activities out there, but the grand majority is : running & cycling. It's still better to support distinct two types, then one. As a matter of fact, devices who support custom activities are far above the 2xx series range, so let's not get silly now.

Regarding "different fields", there's not even a need to support them. The sub 200€ devices don't support cadence or power meters anyway. Just as you can easily change the type from "running" to "cycling" online and not loose any data, the device could do it itself, when saving the workout to the .fit file. That's easily implemented.
