Calorie Evaluation From My 305

I'm road biking to consume Kcal and improve cardio vascular fitness. I'm using MyFitnessPal. I'm Type II diabetic.

My 305 (set for my body parameters) gives me 300KCal consumed jogging and 1400 Kcal consumed road cycling for same amount of time, i.e. 1hr
MFP always doubles these values when I chose 'add calories consumed' manually instead of logging calories directly from my Garmin 305.

Can anyone explain the discrepancy? I cycle cause I burn far more calories, and it's way more fun.

Thanks!
  • Calories burn is an estimate. The formulas used on MFP can't take into consideration factors that the device can. But even with your device the calcualation is still going to show you variances between similar activities that will make you suspect of their accuracy. Bear in mind that to get real accurate Calorie burn would require monitoring the gases you breathe out and have a lot of extra factors added in that can't be done with your device.

Here is a link to a old but still very relevant article on Calorie burn with Garmin Devices....... http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/11/how-calorie-measurement-works-on-garmin.html

    Garmin HRM Cal. Calculation.

    Thanks for the link!

I'm aware that the new Garmin HRMs calculate calories burned based on heart rate, as the older ones, (mine for example) don't calculate from the users heart rate. I imagine regardless that my 305 is more conservative and therefore gives a better estimation. I appreciate the link.....
