Connect giving excessive calories based on steps

Recently Garmin connect has been giving me way too many calories based on my step count.
Today I registered around 1000 calories in actual activities, then connect is adding 2500 calories based on my 16000 step count.
  • You're failing to include your BMR cals in your numbers. You'll probably burn about 2000 cals/day even if you never get out of bed.

Nope there is also 1800 BMR calories! This is just for pure activity!
  • I'm not sure you are understanding the data you're seeing. More than likely, the data is correct.
  • I fail to see how I am misunderstanding the data.

The screenshots of my data from July 31 show total calories of 5841, with active calories (total calories - BMR calories) of 4050, which you can see on the activities tab is made up of 229 calories walking, 468 other (moving gravel), 710 of indoor cardio (orangetheory) and 2643 added based on my step count of 16540.

I am 99% certain that 16000 steps does not equate to an extra 2600 calories burnt on top of all the activities I have already recorded.
  • Consider this. Thousands of people have the same device you have and don't see a problem. You are either looking at the data in the wrong way, or you had a defective device, and in that case contact Garmin for a replacement.

If you're new to 24/7 tracking, I'll bet the device is fine... How many cals a day do you burn a day based on your BMR? 2000 is reasonable, and 2600 could be based on your age and weight!

Your not just tracking cals when you run or walk with this - you are also tracking the cals you burn by "just being alive" 24/7.
  • You have a 24/7 tracker, and for many people, the majority of calories they burn in a day is based on their BMR. If you don't want to see those calories, you bought the wrong device.

I have had the vivosmart for 8 months now and have only recently started experiencing this problem.
I appreciate what you are saying, but I'm perfectly capable of interpreting the data, and I've had no problem understanding how the device works prior to now.
  • Is your weight set wrong? That could give you a bunch of extra calories - if your weight was set 300 lbs when it should have been 185, for example. Do you have GC linked to something else like MFP that might be messing with your calories?
  • My weight is correct - it syncs through from myfitnesspal, but I also just checked it to be sure.
Also my weight has only fluctuated by a few pounds either way since I started using Garmin connect.

And no I don't have any other apps connected - just Garmin connect and myfitnesspal!
  • Contact Garmin support, as maybe your device has a HW problem.
