StepCounter

Hello

I have a vivosmart that I use for work etc and looking at getting fenix 3 for trail and ultra running, wondering as both pick up steps will they show under one section on Garmin Connect or will Vivosmart have its own steps and fenix his own. So if vivo had 5k steps and fenix 5k steps would it show 10k or 2 separate tabs of 5k
I don't plan on using the fenix for work before anyone asks course it will get damaged with work i do not so worried on the vivo
hope that makes sense

Thanks

You can have both on the same account (data will show in one place) but only one can be your step tracker. You should be able to switch which one, but you want to do this first thing in the morning, or last thing at night after syncing.

Otherwise, lets say you have 5000 steps on your vs, then you switch step tracking to the F3. Your steps on GC will stay at 5000 steps until you get more than 5000 steps on the F3. That's why you want to do it first thing when both nave near zero steps, or at night, when one has pretty close to all the steps you'll get for the day.

Your 5k on both example would result in a total of 5k on garmin connect.

An extension of what Jim said - there can be only "one" and no, I'm not talking about the Highlander. In order to avoid duplicate and/or suspect data, only use one device for each function. So, your vivoactive could be your step counter and your activity device (running, swimming, riding, etc.) would be your Fenix 3. As Jim said, GC only allows one step tracking device at a time, but wouldn't stop you from running multiple activity trackers simultaneously. This would create duplicate activities in GC and would mess up your reports for total distance, average speeds, etc. Not to mention that some devices do things better than others - I wear a FR620 for running and a Vivofit2 to count my steps. The FR620 obviously does a lot better with the running dynamics, gps and such vs just using the activity function on my Vivofit 2 for a run. However, in the weight room, if I want my heartrate recorded, I use the Vivofit2 activity function because the FR620 doesn't understand a non running/cycling workout.

Since my FR620 provides a step count on a run, GC splits out run steps vs normal steps in at least one chart once I sync both devices. That being said, it gives no step credits until the Vivofit2 data arrives.

Note: Testing multiple devices for accuracy would be the only reason for running multiple activity devices simultaneously. There are a couple situations, such as comparing accuracy where this would be desirable. That being said, I wouldn't keep both activities once I was done analyzing the data.
  • ok thanks both, did do some investigating last night and found that, it makes sense, will decide what i am going to do when i get the fenix 3

    thanks
  • One other thing. With GC mobile on your phone, you can only be connected to one device at a time. so you'll only get notifications, etc on one of the devices.
