As a naturalist which Garmin GPS should I buy?

I am a naturalist and would like to buy my first Garmin GPS. However, I am uncertain what are the basic differences between the various types of your GPS'es. In just four weeks I will be travelling in the Alps (Austria) in order to visit nature areas and I will use the GPS there. A friend of mine has emailed me KMZ files with exact localities which I intend to visit using the GPS.
Garmin eTrex 10, eTrex 20 and eTrex 30 have been recommended by some people. Others have recommended Garmin Oregon (300 and 400). But what are the most important differences between these types? Do you agree that any of these types may be an appropriate choice for me?
I need good and detailed maps (not just road maps, but off-road) on the GPS. In this case it will be maps covering Austria, but I will of course also use the GPS when travelling elsewhere in Europe or in other continents. I presume I should buy additional maps or subscribe to a service so that I can download maps for various countries in the world when I need them. Can you explain how that works?
Can I transfer KMZ files directly from my PC to any of the above-mentioned GPS'es, or will I have to enter the localities manually as waypoints?
I hope you can give me some useful information so that I can buy the GPS which will best fit to my needs!
