not counting down to shut off in car

I have a 2555lmt which is supposed to count down when I turn off the car ignition, but it doesn't. Supposedly it will also count down--when fully charged--after being unplugged from my computer, but it doesn't. Is there something I need to do to have it count down? I'd appreciate any help you can provide.
