Bluetooth Issues with Forerunner 225 & Garmin Connect

Anyone else having major frustrations with the new Garmin 225 & Bluetooth Sync?

I can't seem to get any help from any Garmin contact us links on this.

• I have a Samsung Galaxy S5. It finds multiple other Bluetooth devices with ease but it takes me multiple turn-on, turn-off attempts on both devices to find the Forerunner 225.
• If I can get past the first issue above and the phone says it’s connected and the watch say “Status = Connected”, the Garmin Connect App still struggles to connect to the device “Device not found”
• Sometimes the device name on my Phones Bluetooth menu changes from “Forerunner 225” to “nRF51822” which might explain the problem
• Then even if I can eventually get the device recognised on my Garmin Connect app, the sync seems similarly impossible to get going. Not matter what I push it doesn’t seem to force the sync. The only way I’ve managed to get it working at all is to wear the watch to sleep and then sync via the sleep mode activity area.

Obviously a very frustrating experience
  • Garmin Support

I just got off the phone with Garmin support and they said it's a known issue with the firmware that they are working on. Thankfully the iPhone is having the problem too cause they realize it's not just a small isolated Android issue (My thoughts...). They hope to have an update out over the next couple of weeks to fix it. We can only hope... They also said that the master reset will possibly work, but is only a temporary fix because it will happen again.

  • Same Problem - BT to Iphone No Worky

I have a new 225 and a iphone 5c....BT connection is not working. Waiting for a Garmin and Apple fix I guess.
  • Found a fix for the Bluetooth connectivity problems - Forerunner 225

I think I might have found a fix. ** Well atleast this definitely did the trick for me. **

    1. make sure that you're running the latest firmware.
    a. by connecting to the Garmin Express desktop utility
    b. by connecting to the Garmin Connect phone app

    2. do a factory reset on the watch (the life-saver)
    3. set up you watch.

    What to expect now:
    - every time you open your watch settings (navigate away from the watchface) the bluetooth symbol starts blinking in the upper screen. As soon as the symbol is solid shown the phone will state "Phone connected" in a sort of popup on the watch. At that point the app will be synced in the background or visually in the bottom of the app.

Faith in humani.... euh.. Garmin restored! :D Good luck!

I can't take credit for this solution though, I got this answer on a Dutch techforum by another FR225 user.
  • Bluetooth issues connecting Forerunner 225 to my Moto X

Like other users having connection issues, I'm experiencing the following:
After a fresh installation of Garmin Connect on my Motorola Moto-X 2nd generation, I'm able to connect my Forerunner 225 using Garmin Connect. As long as I stay in range of my phone, my watch stays connected and does synchronize when needed. As soon as I'm out of range, the connection is broken but my phone keeps reporting that it is connected while Garmin Connect on my phone reports disconnected.

My workaround for now is to switch of Bluetooth on my watch, the FR225 and switch it back on after, let's say, an hour. Start the Garmin connect app on my phone, refresh the connected devices tab and voila, it connects again. Not the way it should work but at least it's working. A kind of.

Contacted the Garmin helpdesk this morning. The only thing they offer is sending a checklist for Bluetooth which I didn't receive .

In my opinion there's a timing issue in the firmware of the watchwhich needs to be solved. Hopefully, it will be available in 2.41. :)
  • This bug is so frustrating... Every day I think I find the right collection and ordering of phone/watch reboot, bluetooth enabling, and pairing, only to try again the next day and see it fail to connect. I probably waste 15 minutes a day on this nonsense out of sheer stubbornness instead of just connecting to my PC via USB.

Against the Garmin Product Support team's advice, I just performed the Factory Reset (as you suggested) and it did fix the issue for me.

    Thank you!
