Garmin 310XT - bike distance is 8km out, s/b 40km, recorded as 32km. Why?

I did the Cardiff Olympic Triathlon on 28/06/15. The bike course is measured on Gmaps pedometer as 40km approx. My Garmin measured it as 32km. How can it be 8km out?

Perhaps you could post a link to the activity.

When you look at the activity map does the track closely follow the course that you cycled or are there big deviations?
