Hiking GPS that works like Edge -> Connect

I love my Edge for biking. I can click Start Ride, then End Ride and save, connect the device, and a few seconds later it's all there on Connect. But my older Colorado doesn't have a start/stop hike function, and there is no easy way to get that day's hike from the Colorado up to Connect. So I've tried taking the Edge out on hikes, but three problems:

  • There is no way to change the activity type from bicycle to hike in advance
  • The reception is very poor in dense trees and in valleys/mountains, so I get spotty reporting (Edge though a recent 7 mile hike was only 2 miles)
  • No geocaching support

So I'd like to get a newer hiking GPS with great reception but that also includes a start/stop feature like the Edge, so I can auto-upload to Connect. I can't tell from Garmin's product pages which hiking GPSs can do start/stop. Suggestions? Thanks.

If you want the stop and go feature check out the Oregon 600s and possible Montana and new Etrex. Check out out gpscity.com, they have some specifics and training videos. I don't know how the Oregon 600 interacts with Connect sice I don't use Connect.
  • Connect is designed for fitness devices, Basecamp is aimed at Hiking GPS ...

Thanks much for the responses everyone. Reading up on the current generation of GPSs makes me realize how outmoded my Colorado is. Just ordered a 600t (found a very good sale price at Amazon). Looking forward to taking it for a spin.

    Thanks!

    Nope, not quite

Well, shoot. The Oregon arrived today. I love everything about it... except that it won't seem to sync to Connect, which was my main motivation for the upgrade. I'd even be OK with that if I could upload new track files manually, but when I try to do a manual import into connect.garmin, I can't find my saved track files anywhere.

I must be missing something obvious here. Does anyone know where the .tcx files are stored on this device? This is seriously disappointing.

    Thanks.

OK, so figured out that I can access the tracks from Basecamp, export from there, and upload them manually to Connect. Unfortunately when you do that and try to change the activity type, there are no options for Hike or Mountain Bike, or Road Bike, etc. Just generic options.

There's also an option in Basecamp to upload directly to Connect, but it won't take my username and password (the same one that I use on connect.garmin.com, which I tested carefully and store in a password manager) - just says "Incorrect username or password."

Damn. This is exactly the kind of experience I was spending money to NOT have. I like the device, but feeling like I wasted a lot of money. Tried to do research in advance to make the right choice, but failed. Will probably send it back.

Back to the drawing board. Grrr.
