Thank you Garmin for taking an action against the Spammer

There were over 100 pages of spam in this forum over the weekend. It really needed to stop!
  • it is if you use the right software ;) can't tell you what it is as that would be spamming:) it begins with "XenF" it has the best Spam Management built in i have seen in years of any forum software, plus you can heighten the security more with plugins. I've been using it for years. havent had a spammer post publicly for users to read in years. vast majority are caught at registration and IP's banned for 7 days. the ones that do get through are moderated 1-2 a day max.

banning the name is useless on its own, as the name is most likely random - though IP assocation can work to a degree. it's user registration process that can stop 80-90% of spambots, especially when checking it against DNSBL, Akismet and StopForumSpam databases.
  • When i goto report a second post for spamming WHY do i need to wait 120 Seconds between reporting posts?

there will be 10 more spam posts by the time I reported it!

  • There was one about 1/2 hour ago entitled "Garmin Connect Mobile app". Where/how do you report it? The poster is Derd1963.

I think the spammers are calling the shots...

They have the freedom to post spam at a faster rate than I can report it.
  • It's actually unhelpful to report recent threads started by spammers as in trying to delete them we then have to ensure we don't delete your post. Current threads are easily spotted, what can be missed are posts within existing threads or perhaps threads that are days old that have clearly been missed. Reports of those are appreciated.

Agreed, however. Policies in place allow the initial spammers to wreak havoc when and where they like. limit new users to say 3 posts max before they get enhanced privileges. create hidden fields in registration - this catches the spambots out straight away. they auto fill everything!

I am not spamming but trying to help Garmin sort its issues out. why it is taking so long to implement a few vBulletin addons is beyond me.

please sort it out. it really isn't that hard!

This proves there is NO anti-spam management in place.

In an effort to reduce a recent increase in spam Garmin has implemented a verification requirement for all new postings. This will remain in effect as we pursue other available options. We regret the inconvenience.

I would have thought it best to be honest. ie.....We regret the inconvenience that we cannot stop spam!
