Thank you Garmin for taking an action against the Spammer

There were over 100 pages of spam in this forum over the weekend. It really needed to stop!
  • There must be a significant number of users that actually click on the spam links. Otherwise it would seem that spam would go away on it's own.

    Maybe Garmin should also put a big scarlet "A" next to the userID of those that have clicked on the links!

    Just poking fun...... But seriously, if there were not benefit to the spammers, then they wouldn't be doing it. So what is the benefit? Monetary? Infamy? other?

    I do wish they'd put the captcha next to the "submit" button.

    I understand the current work around using captcha's, but sincerely hope there will be a smarter solution implemented to handle spam.
    Perhaps:
    • regulating the posting behavior of new accounts;
    • checking on IP address on account creation, so that it is not possible to create more then one account a day from one IP address;
    • etc
  • I don't know if it was a cache issue, but I saw lots of spam this morning, 2 days after the change has been put in place.
  • Where was it? If submitted today it will have been deleted. If not and it came in a while ago it's been missed so it'll help if you click on the Report button and report it to the mods. Thanks
  • Hi Sussamb,

    What I typically do when I come here is look at New Posts. This morning, I clicked on New posts and all I got (pretty much) was spam. When That happens, I go back to the Home page and go into each sub-forum separately - which I did. By the time I finished touring the sub-forums, I noticed that the spam was gone.

    That's why I suspect it might just have been a cache issue on my side as the spam posts disappeared within a few minutes. Either that or another mod deleted them this morning while I was here.
  • It was probably me :) but thanks for clarifying it.
  • If it was you, then the captcha change may not be having the desired effect.
  • It's slowing it down but not stopping it :(
  • The problem is two fold.

    user registration is flawed.

    you can create an account with no real credentials - ie. fake email address etc. this creates an active account, though you cannot post.

    these accounts should not be seen - but they are, this is due to poor management of forums regarding user registrations and permissions.

    my guess is alot of the spammers now were allowed to register quite some time ago, have the correct permissions and now are actively using spambot to post using these accounts.

    I cannot believe that it takes so long to implement a spam management policy!

    perhaps an email to the CEO again will get the ball rolling!
  • Accounts are banned when posts are deleted, so it's not a question of spammers 'registering a long time ago'. Implementing a foolproof policy while making it relatively simple for genuine users isn't as easy as you appear to think.
