801 Switches Off Mid Course

While attempting this months (June) Strava's Grand Frondo 115km my Garmin 801 switched off mid course. I did notice that I got a message whether I wanted to agree to this action but I ignored it because I was riding at speed and didn't want to take my hands off the handlebars. I stopped the bike and switched the unit back on again and rode on. This happened again after about 30 mins of riding but this time I pressed ignore. After a further 10 mins I noticed that although the map route was working the unit was not logging my time and then I realised my ride wasn't being recorded. I then had to restart the route again before the unit started recording my ride. So I ended up with 2 recorded rides for my one journey, which unfortunately Strava does not recognise as one ride and so I did not qualify for the Grand Frond - terribly frustrating and disheartening when realisation of this struck me in the middle of the ride. Can anyone explain why this happened and how I can avoid it in the future? Was it because the unit thought that it was in idle since I may not have tapped any change screens for a certain period? I don't want this to happen again, particularly when I am trying to achieve (for me what is a very taxing achievement) and get recognition for that achievement.
