Getting exact time for a race distance? (21.4km the measured distance for a PR!)

Yesterday I ran 21.4 km, deliberately running the extra few metres to ensure I covered the full 21.1.

Unfortunately now my Garmin (FR15) has recognised this 21.4km as the half marathon distance. Odd?

I was expecting the Garmin/ Garmin connect to automatically process the time for 21.1km and set this as my PR, but this hasn't happened. Is the watch taking into account an error margin?

I used the graph in the 'player' facility on Garmin Connect to give an approx. time, scrolling across until I reached the approx. distance (I had to estimate between 21.09 and 21.19). It is possible to insert a manual PR, but I was hoping to get the data directly from the watch.

Is there a function/ feature that I've missed??
  • When it creates a PR in connect it looks at the full length of the run and if it is within a certain margin of the PR distance (half marathon in this case) it will offer you the option to set a PR for this. If you want to get your PR correctly for this you will have to manually set the total distance to 21.1k and set the Time to whatever your time was at that distance. I guess that this is because the PR functionality is probably aimed at races which are (usually) accurately measured and typically if you run a half marathon race then your distance as measured by your watch is often over the actual race distance - in these cases I manually adjust the distance on the activity to match the accurately measured race distance and I think this is the scenario that Garmin are catering for.
