Active Calories Report is broken

It appears that around 11:30am EST (June 4, 2015) Active Calories report went seriously broken. The number of calories attributed to walking skyrocketed. What used to be 200-300 KCal per day now is close or in excess of 1,000 KCal. What's more, this change isn't reflected in Total Calories report. Also, the days with no activities (walking alone) still appear to have a reasonably decent walking calorie assignment. So, my only theory is that Garmin started double counting something.

Perhaps, activities that started as "indoor walking" (kettlebells and indoor rowing for which I'm forced to use indoor walking option on my Vivoactive) but have been reclassified after being uploaded are counted twice? Or runs themselves? Or all activities and walking are double-counted as walking?

For example, last Friday (see attachment) I had 1,177KCal active calories according to the Total Calories report. But Active Calories for the same day shows 1,770KCal, with bulk of which -- 979 -- are coming from walking. Looking into day's details, we see that 6,026 steps in my run (540KCal) and 8,002 steps throughout the day (386KCal). So, the day details don't match Active Calories report either.
  • Its been broken for months, I have given up posting threads here and hassling Garmin as they don't seem to care. You can search for other threads if you want, many posted by myself.

It also means seamless interaction between a 920XT ( and probably other Garmin watches ) and MyFitnessPal is out of the question.
  • At least for me, the calorie count for regular intraday walking seemed fine until yesterday. Now I have the numbers blown out of proportion.

I remember other reports not working properly a month ago with only one or two different activity types during a week (say, running and strength training). As I added indoor rowing as a third type (classifying it as Other/Rowing), the reports reverted back to normal.

Garmin, really?! If it can't be fixed, can it be rolled back? You had a perfectly working reports, and now they are messed up.
  • If it helps, it seems the calorie count for walking is only off on days when there are some other activities. If there have been no activities that day, the calorie count stays reasonable which proves my hunch that something somewhere gets double-counted or uses a wrong multiplier.

What I'm noticing -- and think is new -- is that step-based calories seem to be double-counted now. So whereas a month ago if I went for a run, I didn't also get a ton of "green" walking calories added to my activity calories. (I got some, but not a lot). Now they seem to be duplicated. If I do a workout that is not step-based (I use a Vivosmart, which syncs to an HRM), I'll get more calories from the workout that don't seem duplicated as walking.

I really think this is new, or something in the algorithm on Connect that was already bad has gotten worse.

Run activity is being double counted as walking

I see the thread is several months old however I did a 10 mile run today and burned about 1500 calories. I also got credited with walking 10 miles and credited for burning around 1400 calories.

Garmin connect is most defiantly not filtering workout activities against the daily activity tracker for step count correctly.

At least I am not going mad

    Thanks for the post :)
  • Epic fail by Garmin

I stopped using Vivoactive mid-June because the double-counting of calories and (potentially) steps defied the whole purpose of the device. It is refreshing to see things haven't improved at all in six weeks after the problem was reported -- people are seeing the same issues as late as end of June.

Way to go Garmin! With support like that, who needs competitors?
  • Same issue for me. I have both a Vivosmart and 920XT. Whether or I track activities through the vivosmart or 920XT, Garmin still adds steps back into the calorie metrics. This makes the total calorie number worthless.

ahh ... well I'm glad I searched first. I found mine broken these last few weekends (when I do my spreadsheet coalition) and was going to take some screen snapshots and post about it.

Has anyone reported this to garmin support?

I notice that the report is no longer available to add to my Garmin Dashboard ... so perhaps they've just resigned themselves to the fact that the software is rubbish and the new development team are unable to fix this. (assuming they even have a development team)
  • hi everyone...

In the F235 forums we have a similar discussion going on. It's propably the same issue and seems to be a GC bug.

    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?337435-Number-of-Daily-Steps-vs-Distance-(for-non-timed-activities)

I wrote my counts together for thast 10 days or so, those are counts for walking (i.e. no workouts). look at the numbers in bold, it's just not right (I have a stride lenght of something like 0,70-0,82 m). And also calories seem strange, sometimes getting double as much active walking calories with half the steps.

date / steps / calories / distance (km)

    dec 12 / 3899 / 1156 / 4,29
    dec 11 / 5619 / 145 / 4.60
    dec 10 / 4357 / 365 / 3.02
    dec 9 / 4289 / 448 / 4.90
    dec 8 / 5418 / 391 / 4,29
    dec 7 / 2692 / 222 / 3,17
    dec 6 / 945 / 89 / 0.77
    dec 5 / 0 / 297 / 1.46
    dec 4 / 3427 / 702 / 3,15
    dec 3 / 3371 / 1146 / 8,48
    dec 2 / 2829 / 470 / 2,33

You can see those numbers when you go to the "activities" tab in the daily overview (e.g. choose steps from menu and then activities tab)
