Wrong Activity name

Former Member
Former Member
Hi Guys,
I'm doing every sunday the same run and systematically the Garmin watch name this run "Johor Baru run" or something like that. I don't know why. This is not the name I want to have. I would rather the system not put anything than a wrong name to it. I can of course change it, but I'd rather change it once for all for all existing and future runs. Does anybody know why this is happening and how to solve this?
Thanks,
Viv'

    I agree with "Viv".

It would be nice if we could build our own "default" activity title, and ideally a way to set up rules for the title that match our needs. I would rather have a default title of my own choosing, and then edit by exception only

By default, Garmin titles all my runs as "Spring Running". Spring is a nearby town and a default for the postal zip code, but I live in Shenandoah. I run in Shenandoah, or The Woodlands. Neither of which is in "Spring". Sometimes, but rarely, I do run in "Spring".

Hopefully you can come up with a way to do that in our default/account settings.

The problem is the the database that Garmin uses (probably provided by your locality) set the "name" for the GPS location where you started. In one country, it uses the voting district as the "name", even if it's something most people don't know.

I can see GC allowing an option for "auto name on/off", as for me, the names are spot on and name the suburb where I started, and find it far more useful than "untitled" as it was in the past. You get an "auto name" or go back to "untitled" as it was in the past.

    Wrong Country

    Hi,
my activities I do in Singapore also all name Johor Bahru Running or Cycling. This is somewhat annoying, since Johor Bahru is a city in Malaysia. Its a complete different country!!! Can this please be fixed, so that all activities made in Singapore are called Singapore Running?

garmin added a setting in your profile so you can select to have your activity named "Untitled" vs it using the data it knows to select a location and auto name it. If you want the data named properly, it's a matter of the data that your locale provides as far as a name for a given area and GPS location. Garmin doesn't maintain that. Someone close to you does...

I totally agree. But what I like with my Fenix3 is that it will give me the a heading saying if my activity was "Running", "Cycling" or whatever.

My Edge 1000 will always say Cycling even if it is Indoor Cycling. How come this is different? Can I set my Edge 1000 put the Activity type as heading? Should i start my own tread?

    Wrong country / Simply inexcusable

    Hi jim_m_58,
please have a look at the attached screen grab and then you might want to reply with a solution rather than an excuse and blaming
somebody else "Someone close to you does...". It is neither understandable nor excusable for a company like Garmin to get the
country wrong. Singapore is and independent, sovereign country for more than 50 years!

    wrong activity name

    Hi Guys,
So I read a the threads and there seem to be no fix. Right?
I was hoping that once I enter my own name of the activity, the watch would be smart enough to recognize the same run and give the same name.
Instead it seems that I can either choose to leave a wrong city name which is the one Garmin has stored at that GPS position or every time.e enter my own run name.
    Quite disappointing.

Shame on Garmin for getting this WRONG!

One would hazard a guess that in naming the activity, my Garmin Fenix 3 would have pulled in the co-ordinates and KNOWS which country I'm in!! For all the activities that I did in SINGAPORE, the activities are either named Pengerang xxxxx or Johor Bahru xxxxxx - I can't believe that Garmin actually do not know geographical boundaries??

Every time I go into GC to edit these activities, I can't help but think that somebody in Garmin ought to be doing his work right and I would say "SHAME ON YOU GARMIN FOR GETTING THIS WRONG".

As was pointed out in an earlier post, SINGAPORE is a sovereign country for over 50 years and we are a mighty little red dot on the map! How could Garmin have mistaken us for being in our neighbour's land!!:mad::mad::mad:

As if having bad altitude (still not getting it right!!!), gps sensors are not bad enough for this watch........ not to mention the sudden battery drain even on 6.50...

With respect, I think you're both misunderstanding what's being said in the replies. Garmin will use third-party data to map GPS coordinates to a location name, so it's not something that's under Garmin's direct control. Garmin basically feed the start coordinates into a third-party database, which then spits out a location. You may choose to consider Garmin accountable for this, but laying the responsibility at Garmin's feet wouldn't seem appropriate. Maybe if you reported the issue to Garmin they might pick up the issue with their data provider?

in my case all the activities in Bucharest (Romania capital) are named "Stefan Odobleja Cycle" or Stefan Odobleja something.
Don't know what exactly is this Stefan Odobleja, this could be:
    - a high school from Bucharest (not that big to represent the capital);
    - a small village more than 300 km away;
    - or a street in another town 600 km away.

I have a friend using Garmin Vivoactive watch and all his activities in Bucharest or any other town from the country are named correctly.

This is not a Garmin problem is a watch problem. Seeing this problem on a device from a company selling also GPS devices with maps for cars, boats and more i think this a pretty embarrassing problem to have and not to solve it for a product very up to date and brand new.
