requesting device identification file failed on fenix 2 first time bluetooth use

I am getting this error while attempting to connect my garmin fenix 2 via bluetooth to my phone.

I installed the gamin connect app on my android phone.
I turned on bluetooth on my fenix 2, and tried to do the pairing, entered the key, and step one worked (smiley face) step 2 failed with this error

"requesting device identification file failed"

i googled and there is ZERO help for this situation listed on the web for fenix 2.
  • I've been having this same problem with fully pairing my Fenix 3 to my phone. I first found the problem when I loaded a new ROM on the phone and had to reconnect to Garmin Connect. It kept getting stuck on the "requesting device identification." I even tried to hit "sync" when it got to that portion but that didn't help any. The first time, I wiped out the watch and started back up from scratch. That worked until I had to connect again after I switched ROM's again. I know, I have a problem, haha.

I didn't want to have to wipe out the watch again and have to go through all the settings to get it how I like it so I tried something different. What ended up working was going into Garmin Express and deleting the watch from there. Then I went to connect.garmin.com and deleted the phone out of there. Once I did all that, it sync'd just fine. Hopefully that helps someone with this problem.

    This is only one solution.
  • Where is Garmin

    This is only one solution.

Are Garmin actually going to bother replying to this thread? Isn't this a Garmin forum?

Get your act together Garmin so I can actually use my very expensive product you've sold me!!!!!
  • Thank you

on Fenix 3, I had also the same issue (firmware 4.40)

Solution, during pairing while step "requesting device identification file...", I go back to the watch and select "Sync" in the bluetouth menu. The pairing finnally ended succesfully.

    +1 Works with Fenix 3 v 4.70 Thank you!
  • If that helps, for me it was a problem with Garmin Index Scale. My new phone's Bluetooth was incompatible with the scale and the setup was failing at the request identification file.
