Cant upload a ridden course

Hi all, I wonder if you can help, I am a relatively new cyclist and 810 user, and I created a course for the first time with my 810, and despite having some issues with the GPS during the ride, e.g. stopping the timer for example, and in the summary of the ride, it is also showing 4 laps... ( not quite sure why, other than I probably pushed the lap button )...... I do have a ride saved on the card in the Garmin.
For some reason though, I am unable to upload the ride to connect.
Can anyone shed some light as to why this might be the case, is this an issue that others have had ? As an aside, I have had no issues just riding, i.e. not using a course, and I have been able to upload these rides without issues.

One thing I did notice when I finished the course, is that the unit seemed to power down automatically, and it was only after switching the nit back on, that it gave me the option of saving the ride.
I have seen other issues around the fit files not being terminated properly, i.e having extra / not enough /. not properly terminated fields, but how can I check if this is the case in this instance, so that I can try and correct the issue and get it uploaded to analyse ?

Thanks a lot.
  • First off, AFAIK, you cannot upload a course to Garmin Connect. You should be able to upload your activity. If you installed Garmin Express to your computer, then it should sync automatically when you connect your edge810 to it. If it's not doing that, then there may be an issue with the activity log file.

If your timer is still showing the time of the activity on it, then start the timer briefly, stop it and then ensure that "save" was selected. Then you can try to let it sync again. You will probably need to do that while it's disconnected from the computer. Failing that, the next thing I'd try to do is an "import" . You have to go to the activity summary page of Garmin Connect and click the "import" link over the right hand columns of the activity listings. Then just brows to the /garmin/activities folder of your device and attempt to upload it.

Failing that, I would then post in the edge810 sub-forum in one of the threads where people request help to fix their .fit file and see if someone can repair it for you.

If you cannot see the edge as a drive or removable storage with your computers file browser when it's connect via the USB cable, then there is an issue with your computer. In that case it will be unlikely any of the above will work.

The edge series should only power down automatically if the timer is not running AND auto-powerdown is enabled in the settings. (I think that is the default). But perhaps there is an issue with the latest software version for the 810, is that what you have on it?

    Thanks for the response.

Hi, it was the activity that I was trying to load, and it didn't appear to be working, however, I did notice some time later that it had been uploaded to my linked strava account, and then when I checked connect, the activity was there and available to view. I dont know if there were issues syncing or making the activity available between the 810/strava/connect, or if it was something else, but the activity now appears to be available in connect.

USeful piece of advice, re: the Import, if I have issues like this in the future, although at some point in time, it does seem to have sorted itself out, I will remember that.

No issues seeing the 810 or the card as mounted volumes, so I don't think that that was a contributing factor..

According to connect, I do have the latest revision of software, and I have been caught out by the auto power off before, hence I disabled the auto power down a few rides ago, but it did seem that as soon as I reached the final point on the course that I had generated, the unit seemed to put itself to sleep, I will be checking the guides to see if this is usual behaviour.

    Thanks again for the response.

That is not normal behavior. However I've seen some others report that happening recently. So possibly a recent update might have introduced this. I don't remember if the others reports of this where for the edge810.

Might be something you should call Garmin Support about so they can track the issue and decide if something needs to be done. Just posting here does not guaranty Garmin will know about the issue.

    Far enough, makes sense.
I will ride another course before I do that, see if it does the same thing again, just to make sure and if I observe the same behaviour, I will reach out to Garmin.

    Thanks
  • Hi ,
I too am having difficulty uploading a ride from this morning on an 810. Here's a bit of background... I arrived at a stop point & remembered I wanted to 'turn off' segments. They're really annoying as I'd prefer to see cadence & heart rate. So whilst I hadn't stopped the ride, I went into settings. The device froze and no matter which button I pushed, no action. A friend said to briefly turn the device off then on again. It will reset without losing data. He showed me on his & it worked.I tried it on mine & eventually it came back on, but then the device stood still. We set off again, the device show movement, but was stuck on previous time. So I didn't lose data, i just stopped ride, saved data, & restarted ride. It's not what I wanted to do as I would have preferred to keep it as one ride. Again I stopped & saved ride during breaky incase happened again. Then rode home. All together, 3 recorded rides this morning.

So now I'm home, plug device into Mac & start Garmin connect. All 3 rides are listed in device activities. The 2nd & 3rd rides have uploaded, but the 1st has not. I have followed your instructions below & still doesn't work :-(

If your timer is still showing the time of the activity on it, then start the timer briefly, stop it and then ensure that "save" was selected. Then you can try to let it sync again. The response is "some activities couldn't be created"

Can you please advise what else I can do? Thanks

Also if not too much trouble, can you please advise how I can combine these 3 rides into the same ride
    Many thanks in advance
    Ginny
