I've recently been expanding my training area and have been looking at the local segments that other folks have created for somewhere to run/ride. The issue that I have found is that a lot of the segments are irrelevant, lack clear start/stop points and some even clearly violate local traffic laws. Sifting through the piles of segments to find the few that are usable is a nuisance.
So - my proposal is simple - a system of moderation and/or priority that places well designed segments ahead of those that basically unusable. Regional moderators could be appointed/volunteer to review segments that are relevant and meet the criteria following criteria:
Relevancy - they define a clear workout element(ie hill, distance, loop), preferably within common public space
Start/Stop - they start and stop at a relevant local waypoint (ie intersection, trail head, sign)
On Path - they follow established trails and paths, so users without course plotting devices can easily use them
Legal - they travel the correct direction on roads/trails and don't encourage users to violate posted speed laws (this largely applies for cyclists)
Moderators should also have the ability to rename a segments/add notes/comment that better describes the segment if needed. Example - one near me is called "Hot Loop", which probably has relevancy to the creator but means nothing to anybody else. A better descriptor might be Hardisty Drive to River Loop.
Thoughts - I'm open to feedback on this idea, but it would be nice to clean up the segments so they aren't such a mixed bag.
