What is "Max Distance" mean when adding gear?

What is "Max Distance" mean when adding gear? Does that mean if I don't want more than 300 miles on a pair of running shoes, Garmin Connect will alert me when getting close to the "max distance" number or will not allow to attach that gear to an activity? Why is there not a "miles already on gear" option, like Daily Mile has? Wouldn't it be easy to add a field to input how many miles are already on a piece of gear when adding it to Garmin Connect?
  • I have taken the Max distance to be as you say, let you know when you have git your 300 miles.

I agree with the miles already on gear. I won't add my shoes until I get new one's because of this missing feature..........
  • Let's say you get a new pair of shoes, and you want to replace them after 500 miles. 500 miles would be the max distance when you add them.

Now lets say you got a pair of shoes that already have about 100 miles on them. Then, just set the max distance at 400 miles.

You can't assign gear to an activity before the date you added the gear, so in the second case, if you set the max at 500 miles, there would be no way to go back and assign the gear to activites to account for the first 100 miles.

It's really not an issue, as Gear was first available last fall, and I added some shoes that already had many miles on them, and I just set max accordingly, and it let me know when the well used shoes were at their limit.

    Hello Jim,

Nice....a clear cut example of being smarter than the software.

And why did I not think of that?? :p
  • Huh.  I just look at my shoes and say, “the soles are peeling off.”  Then I replace them.  Similar with my bike.  “I’ve had this bike for 35 years.  Time for a new one.”  I don’t know what would happen if I depended on Garmin to instruct me.  Does anybody use this feature to schedule a shower?

  • Well, it doesn't instruct as max distance is entered by an user. Don't know from where you can take reliable distances for new models as manufacturers don't provide them. Someone would need to test a chosen shoes first, without that you can only enter common average value for sport shoes, so it's pointless.

But feature to track distance for a gear is useful, with it you can easier compare which shoes lasted for you longer.

Max distance could be useful if it would propose an average value from mileage of other users for a given model of shoes.
