Export to Google Earth not working

Title says it all really. Doesn't seem to have been working for the past month or so. .kml file is exported but when opened in Google Earth only the start and finish shows but no route. It's a real pain as I use it to plot my orienteering runs. I mark each control as a Lap and then use Google Earth to visualise my route. Can't use Garmin Connect itself as although the route is plotted, only a limited number of laps show up. Can't quite figure out what's wrong with the file that's generated, but like others have commented with gpx and tcx exports, no altitude data is present.
  • This was reported on this forum last month and the problem was relayed to Garmin support. See workaround below.

I noticed this too. The last successful import into Google Earth was on March 10. All activities from March 11 on do not have a track after exporting to Google Earth.
I have a workaround that I've been using until Garmin can fix this:

    • Export the activity as GPX
    • Open the GPX file with TCX Converter
    • Save the GPX file as a KML file
    • Open the new KML file in Google Earth

  • Unfortunately I have a Mac so TCX converter doesn't work :(. Have tried LoadMyTracks which will do similar on a Mac, but won't show the Laps which as I said I use to mark control sites so isn't much use. Hopefully they will fix it soon.
  • Any word yet?

Has there been any follow up yet from Garmin on this? this is driving me crazy.
  • nanaimomtb,

Yes, just today as a matter of fact.
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

We are aware of the issue, and it is currently being looked at. I am sorry but so far, there isn't a date they will have an answer for you. Our engineers are working hard to get the issue fixed so our customers can once again enjoy the export of activities with Google Earth track. I do apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Please let us know if you need further assistance.
  • Still broken!

Just tried again for the first time in a while and it still won't export to Google Earth - is there really an intention to fix this as it's been months now? Does anyone know what exactly is wrong with the kml file that is currently being exported? I've tried to compare a recent kml file with one that works fine exported a while ago and can see no obvious differences, except for he lack of elevation data, but don't really understand why this won't plot the track and Lap Markers.
  • There's an issue with Basecamp and Google Earth also, seems a recent change in Google Earth is the culprit. I know the Basecamp team are working on it and it will require a new version of Basecamp, presumably the Connect team are doing the same.
  • @SUSSAMB - it's not *just* a Google Earth problem; Garmin has corrupt our stored data

@SUSSAMB - I have to respectfully disagree your oversimplification of this ongoing problem. As first reported in these forums in mid-2014 and painstakingly documented in ">my Dec 2014 thread">my Dec 2014 thread and with several emails to Garmin Product Support, it appears that a minority of our stored activities have been corrupted by Garmin's backend storage system. I have worked with product support for over six months since reporting this in December 2014 to no avail.

If you load up my publicly-visible activity linked below, you'll see that Google Earth export fails. But IGNORE THAT. Try to save the activity as a course using the "Save as Course" button. You will get a start point but NO ROUTE whatsoever.

    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/616306043

Plenty of data shown in the web interface, right? Elapsed time, moving time, Speed, Heart rate, Elevation, Cadence, even Temperature. All the graphs look super-duper.

But if you also try to export a TCX file, you'll get a non-zero-length file and conclude that all is well. Until you actually try to use the tcx file. Try uploading the exported tcx file to your own Garmin account. It will fail. Try to upload it to RideWithGPS.com or Strava.com and it will fail. Try to open it in notepad or examine it with any of the many freely-available applications or websites that can parse TCX files and you'll see nearly all data has been stripped from the exported tcx file.

If you can do any of these things successfully, please reply and shed some light that will help myself and other users who firmly believe that Garmin corrupts (some) uploaded activities and therefore cannot be trusted with our data.
  • TCX converter won't open .gpx file

This was reported on this forum last month and the problem was relayed to Garmin support. See workaround below.

Defintily a problem with activities that have no elevation gain (kayaking in my case).

Downloaded TCX Converter, but app would not open the .gpx file. Even if it did, I don't see how to save as .kml file.
