Power spikes - Stages

Former Member
Former Member
Can anyone help? I want to correct my power data from this activity to delete the 2 very obvious power spikes.

I'm not a particularly tekky kind of chap, so simple step by step help appreciated, or even an offer to do it for me? :)

Thanks,

James

    Hi James,

+1 for this question as I've got the same problem, also using a Stages power meter

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    cheers

Need help with same question - data spike Stages to a Garmin 510

I am getting what appears to be good power reading from the Stages to a Garmin 510 but on each ride I have one or two "data spikes" that are three or four times what appears to be my max power. This makes the graph almost impossible to read since it auto scales based on the max reading thus all my ride data is very tiny at the bottom of the graph.
If I could clip the spike down to say avg or another max reading that would be fine.
  • Data

I wish I knew what caused these spikes to occur. Here are the steps I took to remove them from the data:

    • Zoom in on the power spike and make note of its value in watts.
    • Download the activity from Garmin Connect. The file format type needs to be .tcx, not .fit or .gxp.
    • Open the .tcx file in a text editor. For Mac I used TextEdit. Windows users can use Notepad.
    • Open the search function in your text editor. If your erroneous power was 2432 W, you would search for "<Watts>2432". Do not included parenthesis in your search.
    • Replace the erroneous data with whatever you desire. I typically set it to zero. Each second-by-second entry should also have a value for cadence. I like to set this to zero for these sets as well, but this is not really necessary.
    • Save your changes, re-upload the file to Garmin Connect, and delete the old files.

Obviously there are some special cases I didn't address (e.g. multiple power spikes, power spikes with non-constant wattage), but hopefully it will be fairly obvious how you should deal with these once you're looking at the .tcx file.
