Colorado and Garmin Connect

I have both an Edge 200 (for biking) and an older Colorado 300C (for hiking/geocaching). With the Edge, the Connect experience is seamless - I plug it in and seconds later my workout is on the site. But with the Colorado it's completely different. Garmin Express recognizes the Colorado, but I can't get it to show up on Garmin Connect. And if I use the Trip Computer feature on the Colorado, there doesn't seem to be any way to upload it to Garmin Connect. Am I doing something wrong, or does Connect just not support the Colorado at all? Thanks.

    Hello Scot,

Make sure you download and install the latest usb drivers.
    https://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=591

The Colorado does not need Garmin Express. You can Upload Manually into Garmin Connect because it connects with a usb cord.

Upload > Manual Upload > Chose File > Browse to your Garmin Drive > GPX > double click the gpx file you want to load > Upload Activities From File > View Details.

Thanks for the response DATEZZ. And thanks for pointing out that Connect has a manual upload feature. I found under Activities | Import at Connect. Navigated to the GARMIN filesystem for the device but the only file that seemed like it could be a recent track file was GPX/Current/current.gpx . I tried uploading that but the site reported it had an unspecified "problem" with the data. Not sure whether that was a site problem or that this isn't the correct file to use.

Maybe my assumptions are incorrect. I used the Trip Computer feature. Reset it before a hike, and assumed that the current.gpx file would then contain just that hike. I guess there is no equivalent on this device of a set of saved Rides or Routes. Maybe what I want to do is just not possible with the Colorado?
  • I think the Colorado was sold during the time you had to use Garmin's MapSource software to upload and download track, trip, waypoint data and etc. It also requires you to have a map file from a licensed product to install or something like that. Mapsource may let you export the track data you want into a file that Garmin Connect can manage.

I still use MapSource with my old handhelds and marine GPS's, but it's been on my computer so long I've forgotten the particulars of installing it and getting a map imported to it. However there are a lot of people at this website http://forums.gpsreview.net/ that probably can help you with the particulars of both your Colorado and MapSource if you choose to install it. However MapSource has not been updated since 2010, so it might run into issues with newer OS's. However I'm currently using it with windows 7.
  • You can get Mapsource to install if you first install Basecamp if you don't already have a qualifying map product on your PC.

    Hello Scot,

The Trip Computer is only a screen that shows information. Just because it shows info does not mean that you are recording a track.

If the Colorado has a Save function DO NOT USE IT. It will truncate all the data and remove the timestamps and basically ruin the track. You must upload the track at the end of each hike and then clear the track log because every time you turn on the Colorado it starts recording and adding new data to whatever data is in the tracklog.

Check the settings on your Colorado.

Manual page 26. System Setup > GPS > WAAS. Interface > Garmin Serial.

Manual page 29. Make sure Track Log is ON. I highly recommend Recording Method set on Distance with Distance Interval set on 0.01mi (55 ft). Those settings make the Colorado record as if it had auto pause. You move less that 55ft (stand still) and the Colorado does not record (auto pause) until you do move more than 55ft. I have used those exact settings for years on my GPSMAP units.

Another software option is Garmin Training Center.

It has a manual import function that allows you to browse to your Garmin drive and import FIT and TCX and GPX files.

It might recognize your Colorado and allow automatic uploads also.

OK, this is interesting. I earlier reported that when I tried to upload current.gpx from the Colorado to Connect it errorred out. That's true, but what I didn't realize at the time is that it actually did upload several activities in the background. I thought it had failed due to the error message on the site, but it apparently did upload the actual hike plus several garbage activities of 0 miles. I was able to delete those and rename the hike track and all is well. So... not perfect but it worked.

I do have good old Basecamp installed still. As a test, I used Basecamp to extract the hike track and tried to upload it as well, but Connect intelligently recognized that it duplicated data already uploaded from a few days ago and didn't let me continue with that process.

So, basically, the answer is that it's possible to get data from older devices onto Connect, but the process isn't going to be anywhere near as seamless as it is with a modern fitness GPS that saves discrete "Rides" etc.

    Thanks for the assist everyone.
