Is Garmin the next Sony?

I've been a Garmin fan for many years, all of my family member have their watches and car GPS navigation systems. I recently bought the Garmin 920XT and discovered a "bug" in the Connect software that limits my training ability. I know software engineers (my friends) who say it's a 5-minute fix, a simple change in the software, and yet Garmin does nothing, even after acknowledging in an email that they're aware of the problem.

Today I'm having problems with my older watch, the Forerunner 405 and am reading several threads where the people simply gave up trying to find a resolution to the same problem I'm having. So I started reading all the threads for other products and I see a trend. Garmin simply doesn't support their product the way they should. This reminds me of Sony in the 80's and early 90's where they were content to own the market and offered little or no customer service, they rarely responded to customer issues and demands, and today Sony is practically invisible, a one time household brand relegated to a gaming company. Anyone can produce technology, but a great company backs their product with excellent service. I predict Garmin, like Sony, will lose out to companies like Google, Apple, and other companies.
  • Probably. Anyone can make a piece of hardware with features a,b,c but getting them to work - from a user perspective especially - takes more than a software engineer and a quick design.

Garmin has been put on notice: apple are starting to make roads into the fitness / health area without having a "killer app" product yet, which is a lot more warning than most companies get - failure from here is going to show the shareholders just how wisely the CEO was chosen.
Garmin has the choice though, they can hire someone that evaluates products from a user perspective, someone to design proper user interfaces, increase resources spent on fixing bugs... or I can wait 12 months and start using my new apple health monitoring gadget.
Soon after that there'll be a google version available and who knows, maybe Garmin will start licensing the software just to try and keep up with the competition like Sony does for its mobile devices :D
