Old activities not displaying on map

I performed some searches on the forums and have not found reference to an issue that I am having.

I have uploaded over 3,000 activities to Garmin Connect since 2007. Recently I wanted to look at one of my old activities from 2009. All of the information for the activity displayed except its location on the map. The map showed a map of the whole world rather than showing my activity. I had the same result for every activity that I had looked at that were uploaded before May 23rd, 2009. I contacted Garmin Support, who looked at the issue, but have not recognized that anything is wrong with Garmin Connect.

As part of my analysis of the problem, I downloaded the TCX file for a couple of the problem activities to verify that there was no problem with them. The only difference that I noted was that the pre 5/23/2009 activities did not have any exported TCX UnitId and ProductID information for the Garmin Forerunner 305 that I was using at that time. The activities on or after 5/23/2009 had the information.

I was surprised to find that after I downloaded the TCX file for an activity and then refreshed my Garmin Connect query for the activity, it would then display the activity correctly on the map. Note that I did not re-upload the TCX files.

Since I don't look at old activities often, I can live with this issue. However, I am curious to find if any other Garmin Connect users are having the same issue with activities loaded prior to 5/23/2009. If any of you are curious, please look at some of your old activities (pre 5/23/2009) to see if they exhibit the same behavior as mine.

  • I have the same issue though not as much history. I noticed that exporting as either TCX or GPX does resolve the issue on Garmin Connect. Seems illogical since no change should have been made on an export action.
  • I have had the same problem for a long time, actually for pre 2011 activities. I have contacted Garmin Support many times, but they have never admitted there is a problem. Because of this issue, I decided to download all the activities using a bulk download application to transfer to a different service (I used a python program gcexport, but you can find others). As noticed by scottwe, this turned out to make the activities display properly again, so now I can see all my old activities.

  • I eventually used export as a workaround and mass exported to dropbox using tapiriik. Hopefully the maps stick.
  • I see this issue posted every so often. Some have noted that a day or two later everything is normal again.

    I wonder if it's possible that Garmin sometimes is updating some of the websites servers and the data request for the older tracklog of the activity is not able to be fulfilled, but when a export is requested then it is able to pull in the track data.

    Probably something we'll never know. Just ponder and argue. <grin>
