uploading a GPX course to a 310xt

Hi,

I've been trying to figure out how to upload a GPX route (exported from some OS Mapping software) to my watch (a 310XT) so I could follow the route. I've finally managed to do it with the garmin connect/express pairing. It's a faf, but not too dificult now I've figured it out. Since I've seen several people asking on here, over the months, and not solution on there (Even garmin support were stumped by this one), I thought I'd post howto.

Before you trust your life on the hills to this method, make sure you have physical map, a compas, and the skills to use them if it turns out your course data is manged !
I've had my watch go wrong too many times for that to be my only navigation device on the hills !

You will need to use the following software.
* Garmin express (I used 4.5) to send the final file to your watch
* TXC Converter to convert the gpx to a txc file (http://www.tcxconverter.com/TCX_Converter/TCX_Converter_ENG.html) I used version 2.0.29
And you will need acconuts on the following systems.
* Dropbox
* Garmin connect
* An account on https://tapiriik.com to synchronise the two.

How to get a course onto the 310xt.
* Download the route as GPX from your favourate mapping application (I use trailzilla.com)
* Open the GPX in TCX converter, Right click on the first waypoint, and click "change start date". Put a date quite close to today's date so it will synch across with tapiriik
* click on "Save TCX file" Make sure you save it as a "History" track when prompted. I set the activity on mine to "running"
* save the file in your dropbox accont Apps folder (created by tapiriik when it linked dropbox to garmin connect) Make sure the file name is format "yyyy-mm-dd_routename.tcx" e.g. "2015-03-31_back_o_skiddaw2_.tcx"
* wait for dropbox to upload the file.
* go into the tipiriik control pannel, and sync your accounts. (I have the dropbox connector setup to upload only to garmin connect, not to my other activity tracker accounts). It might take a while to sync.
* go into garmin express, and you should see the activity there as a new activity. View activities in list mode, and click on the activity name. it shold open the map of the activity in almost full screen mode.
* click on the cog on the top right, and click "save as course"
* close the activites now, and open the course section on garmin connect and click on the course name.
* click on "Send to device".
* It shoudl prompt you to open garmin express with the downloaded file.
* Garmin express should then sync the file to your device

Hurray. It's done !!

I hope this is useful to someone.
  • How do I import a GPX file (or TCX or KML of the same route) into my 310XT as a course. Thanks.
  • Hi, have you managed to make it work yet?

    A friend of mine completed a trail run using Strava today. I created a Route of his run on Strava and exported GPX and TCX variants of the file. I've tried unsuccessfully many times to import the Strava Route as an Activity. Each time GC complains "undefined."

    From there I assume I can create a course and then transfer the course to my FR. But I cannot even get past step 1 of importing the file into GC
  • Nope. And the lack of advice is deafening. Anyone - can it be done? Surely!
  • I don't use a FR 310xt but you might find this article helpful........ http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/03/how-to-create-mapscourses-for-your.html Although it was written in 2010 and he uses the dated and out-of-support Garmin Training Center. Still, you might pick up some info that is useful.

    If you still use ant agent with the old Garmin Connect website, you can still use Garmin Training Center. However if you have installed Garmin Express, I don't think Garmin Training center will work with your 310xt.

    But all the different fitness sites that work with the FR310xt should have a FAQ or instructions that cover getting courses written with their software to the device. If you are just downloading a .gpx from some site, then your device may or may not be able to handle .gpx files and may need to be converted to something else, but that's better answered by 310xt users in the fr310xt sub-forum.
  • Appreciate this thread is old but have dug out my old 310xt for a trail race.  Anyhow its a little simpler now.  Use Garmin Connect.  Select training and then courses.  This will allow you to import a gpx file or tcx direct into connect.  It then wants to know if it can use openstreet map, the type of route and then give it a name.  Then you can select to transfer to device.   This will open garmin express and assuming the 310 xt is connected (via ant) it will push the course direct to the watch.

    Adding incase anyone else digs out an old 310xt.
