Step tracker + HRM with ANT+ capability?

So I've bought an Edge 510 for my bike and am ordering a speed/cadence sensor today that I'll pair with it. I was thinking of also getting a HRM, but am not sure what direction to go with that. There are a few wrist-wearable devices out there (e.g. fitbit) that can track steps and heart rate, but they only seem to pair up via bluetooth. There are also ANT+ HRMs, but all seem to be worn on the chest...not an ideal design from my perspective (e.g. optional addon with Garmin's vivofit and vivosmart, in addition to Edge). I don't need my HRM to be incredibly accurate, so the wrist worn device is more attractive for me, but it doesn't seem there are any options that would allow me to merge such a device with my Edge and my Garmin Connect, unless I'm missing something. Anyone have any ideas that combine step tracker and HRM in a Garmin Connect compatible device, preferably with ANT+ connectivity for pairing with my Edge?
  • Forerunner 15

Steps, HRM, Sleep tracker, GPS ANT+
  • There are 2 recommended wrist-worn HRM brands:

    Mio and Scosche.

There's the Mio Link, the more expensive Mio Fuse, and the Scosche Rhythm +

I have the Rhythm + and it works well in the gym with my phone and my Vivosmart.

I am about to start my cycling season shortly and I'll be using my Forerunner 305 for GPS and to record activities. My Scosche connects to it just fine. I like to mount my Forerunner on my handlebars but haven't really tested if my Scosche will connect to it in a real world situation as it will be further away for the antenna to reach. Then there's the matter of the tan line it will leave. Obviously, these concerns don't apply to my chest-based HRM.

Some things to think about as you decide.
  • Thanks folks! It looks to me like the Forerunner requires a chest-based HRM (that just sounds awkward) and the Rhythm & Rhythm+ are HRM-only, worn on the arm. That would seem to leave Mio as the only option for a wrist based step tracker and HRM that can communicate via ANT+? Going bluetooth from wrist step tracker/HRM to phone to Edge seems like it would be awkard at best, if it's even possible.

My Scosche Rhythm+ works with my Forerunner 305. I wear it on my wrist these days as it comes with a strap for the wrist and another for the arm. My concern above was whether using it on my handlebars is too far for the Scosche's antenna. Based on DC Rainmaker, it sounds like it will work but, as he says, each person is different. I'll know today.
