Cycle Specific route planning

Bryton route planning does not navigate a rider down a one way street the wrong way, or around a roundabout the wrong way, yet GC course planning still does; many use other course planning software, free and superior to GC as a result.

It really is about time that Garmin offered Cycle Specific route planning, especially as the 810 promotes the fact that you can sync the planned courses stored on GC via your smart phone, handy as a reassuring back up when on a two week tour and was one of the reasons I personally bought one when they first came out. The trouble is that requires the courses to actually be on GC of course, seeing as everyone I know doesn't use GC course planning, then that is a next to useless feature, that we as the consumer have invested in, only for it to not work anywhere near as well as it should.
  • I noticed that Basemap recognises one way streets and roundabouts, so it should be easy enough to implement. For sure Basemap is not very user friendly, I found course planning and editing is far from intuitive! GC course planning as actually great to use, very intuitive infact, it's just a shame it ends up send my around the bend more that it navigates me around one!
  • Well you only need to look at the Bryton forums to see it has its own issues. It does however use cycle specific OSM mapping which Connect doesn't, although similar maps can be loaded to Basecamp (note not Basemap) and should give similar results. Like most things it's horses for courses.

Personally I find Basecamp very easy to use, but then I've been using it for years :)
  • Yes sorry I mean Basecamp :o

I bought my 810 primarily to enjoy plotting, then following that plotted route and have that route backed up on my smart phone, which for me would be reassuring on a two week tour; the Edge touring had not been launched at that time. Sadly that means plotting a route on Garmin Connect, that repeatedly navigates the wrong way down one way streets and roundabouts, when I do finally get a route planned I normally lose turn by turn navigation after about 10 miles! The latter is less of an issue as I am happy to follow a highlighted route without TBT. At £479.99 including mapping I expected GC route planning and the 810 to be far far better than it is to be honest.

GC route planning should be cycling specific, no excuses, it should be. As for Basecamp it's the editing I didn't find intuitive it would either delete the route or not add segments easily, plus I had to have the 810 plugged in for the "microSD-City Navigator NT" to load from the 810.
  • Editing is really straight forward although whether it's intuitive changes from user to user. You may benefit from looking at these videos

Useful videos although to be honest ride with Ride with GPS is still the most user friendly, the course is intuitive to plan, then edit if needed, both during composition and when recalled at a later date. One handy feature I like is you can toggle between walking-cycling-driving when creating, so for you can switch to walking if you want to take the a shortcut over a footbridge for example.

If I want a back up for a few days tour on my smartphone I will to export from Ridewith GPS then add to GC via www.gpsies.com convert page. That said the Smartphone App no longer syncs with phone, I've tried pair, unparing, uninstalling the App; nothing!
  • Every so often I revisit Garmin Connect Course planning to see if it has evolved to something I feel is a viable option.

I never select 'running' as 'course type' I select 'road cycling' then 'popularity routing' or 'follow roads'. I live in a London UK suburb, roundabouts and one way streets are common place and it can take me the wrong way around a roundabout and along a one way street the wrong way. You can plan a route in RWGPS where it doesn't do this; if I can work out how to use Garmin Connect course planning correctly I'd be more than happy to use that.

Is there a setting I can select where it keeps it navigates me consistently around roundabouts and one way streets the correct legal way please?
