Double Counting Calories from Steps?

Former Member

Greetings,

So I have a new Garmin Forerunner with HR Monitor. I use the watch to count my steps during the day and the watch-with-HR-monitor to log my jogs. I noticed that when I start a new activity on the watch (like a jog), the step counter continues to log steps. No sarcasm needed (i.e., "Well of course, you're taking steps...", I get it.). When I'm done with the day I upload to Garmin Connect. As I look through the projection for calories burned, it looks like it may be double-dipping. So let's say I have two entries, the first is for my jog and the second is my total daily steps. Both will have a calories-burned projection next to them BUT the projection for the steps INCLUDES the steps taken during the jog. Are those steps being counted twice for the calorie projections (first for the recorded jog and second in the total step count [which includes the aforementioned jog])?

Make sense?

Naturally, I want that number to be as accurate as possible, because I sync with MyFitnessPal to keep track of how I'm doing with my meals each day.
  • yes, these steps are counted twice
  • It's bugged, and I have been on at Garmin about this for weeks. They say its a known issue that is being looked at but won't give a time frame.

As such, the best way to use MyFitnessPal with one of these watches is to disconnect it from Garmin Connect and add in your activity manually. If you have a 920 you can see your total calories for the day at midnight and use that as a starting point, as long as you know your BMR......which is shown somewhere on Garmin Connect if you have a root around.

Pretty rubbish workaround but what can you do?
