I've been using my Forerunner 10 for a couple of months now and have found it reliable. BUT... looking at the split of a recent run there is something odd which I can't explain. Of the 13 complete miles, all but one fell into the 7.27-8.39 range. But Mile 6 was apparently completed in 4.56.... a time that I am simply not capable of, short of hopping on a bus! Anyone got any ideas how this happened? To be clear, it is shown as a full mile (it was in the middle of my run).
There's a lot of scenarios that can cause it, although in my experience with the Forerunner 405 and 410 it's pretty rare that this happens. When I'm using the footpod every once in a great while something happens exactly wrong at the autolap that causes the next lap to be interpreted crazy-incorrectly, such that pace is recorded at the completely wrong rate: a series of 15 7:05-7:10 miles will have a 3:05 mile in the middle, for example - but it seems to be bounded by the lap, such that at the next lap it's fine. I haven't seen anything *that* far off with GPS in the middle of a run; does the track *look* right on a map? Did you go through a tunnel that on the other side totally goofed up the track? Were you running under dense tree cover? Did you upload it to Garmin Connect or Strava? If so can you share a link?
If it happens very infrequently or has a clearly-explainable reason then you'll be happier just not worrying with it. If it happens with any regularity and doesn't seem tied to some specific situation such as tree cover or tall buildings then it might be a warranty issue.
Thanks for your post Thomas - what you describe is very much what my run looks like, here's the link: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/700236169 I guess I probably did go through some tunnels on the way back from Tower Bridge (north bank), and I haven't run there before so I haven't seen if it could be a regular problem. On the map it does look as though Miles 5-7 are a little short. It's the only time this has happened - I guess the only question I've got is whether the total distance was correct?
