Unable to set display name. Garmin connect unusable as a result.

Hi all,

I just got a Forerunner 910xt, and decided to create an account on garmin connect. Strange things started happening:

The system said my email address was already in use. I _might_ have previously given Garmin my email address to register a car GPS unit years ago, but I don't think so. Other than that I can think of no way garminConnect could have my email.

Anyway, I re-set the password and logged in. Now it asks for a display name, and apparently my first choice (LeftyAce) was already in use. I don't know why GC needs a unique display name, so I tried LeftyAceWhyUnique out of frustration. The system says "Could not save, please check your values and try again."

BUT, apparently that display name took, b/c I got an email congratulating me on signing up for garmin forums with the username LeftyAceWhyUnique! Aargh.

Current status: when I sign in to GC using my email address, GC insists that I set a display name. Now it says LeftyAceWhyUnique is in use. I cannot get past that page and thus cannot do anything in GC.

Any suggestions? Or, is there an alternative service apart from GC that I can use to track workouts? This is absurd!

  • I suggest that you contact Garmin support. Bit confused over the comment about display name on forum vs connect though as those are different. The other option (which I know is not ideal) is to sign up using another email - but I would follow the support route first

    Thanks for the reply, JSRUNNER. I contacted garmin support to see what they can do.

    According to this thread, it looks like the display name is the same across GarminConnect and the forums: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?80198-Change-User-Name

    EDIT TO ADD: Now this is funny, I tried another Display Name when trying to log in to Garmin Connect, and it failed, of course. But my forum name was changed to that new name with no confirmation, email or otherwise (LeftyAceWhyUnique73). This is pretty funny.

    Hi Im having the same problem, the system will not accept any text I input as a display name and so I cannot proceed to use the Garmin connect. Very frustrating. I am in email contact with the support at the moment and they have suggested using a numeric value in my display name (honestly....!) and a different browser. None of these recommendations work. I will give this a day for them to resolve or the watch goes back in the box and back to the shop... too much money has changed hands for such amateur BULL........

    I cannot believe how difficult it is proving to get this logon issue resolved. After 7 emails with the support team I now have a ticket logged on their system and they will "get back to me". Why oh Why is it so impossible to log on to garmin connect? I will be returning this product to the seller tomorrow unless someone in support can LOG ME IN!!!!!!

    arghhhhh im having the same problem...saying my display name is being used "mantababe" oh dear yes it is being used....BY ME!!!!

    this is so ridiculous, im thinking of changing my tom tom to a garmin ummmmmmmm whats the point if i cant log onto garmin connect
