Problem with Oregon

I'm a GPS noob, have a new Oregon 650 with US Northeast 24k topo loaded.

Problem: I turn on Track, start the track up and go for a hike. When I return there are gaps in the track, where no points are recorded, even though I have not touched the device, just carried it in my pocket... Today the first 30 minutes of the walk nicely mapped, the middle 30 minutes completely missing, and the last 20 minutes then shows up!

Has happened now on 3 consecutive days.

Most recent setup: (have messed with this a bit, today tried turning Autostart off, no joy, after 1st two fails)

Record Interval: Auto
Interval: Most Often
Autopause: ON
Autostart: OFF
Output: GPX
AutoArchive: When FULL
Trip Recording: ALWAYS
Recorded Data Reset: Prompted.

I want to be able to clear the track at the beginning of a long day hike, start it up, and rely on it being accurate at the end of the day.

What am I doing wrong? What is the problem here?

Thanks for any help. Otherwise a rocking device, looking forward to taking some really longdistance walks with it later this year over wildnerness terrain..
