Add a step counter to the Garmin swim?

For all of us with Garmin Swim watches. It is a nice looking watch to wear outside the pool and it does have an accelerometer, could Garmin add a feature to count steps to this watch? Garmin, how hard would it be to write a program? Maybe make it a fitness tracker as well?

The problem is probably the HW itself, as to be used as a 24/7 tracker, the HW must allow for a very low power mode, and possibility a different accelerometer chip.
