Run pace smoothing, like power for a bike, please

Hi,

The instant run pace on all the Garmin watches I've owned tends to fly all over the place and isn't very stable. I tend to watch average lap pace instead.

Can we have the option to smooth it by 3s, 10s or 30s like you can with power on a bike (where the problem of a variable instant readout is similar)?

Thanks, Howard
  • sounds like a useful feature
  • New Garmin units like 920XT smooths instant run pace by showing it in steps of 5 seconds/km, so it will show for instance 4:00min/km or 4:05min/km, but never 4:02min/km
  • That's interesting but not quite the same thing. Imagine if you had a powermeter that only displayed your power in increments of 10W? That would make it difficult to gauge your effort, particularly if you were doing a hard interval.

Having the ability to smooth run pace over a variety of timescales would enable you to pare it down when you were doing short intervals, but look at the longer term trend when you were doing a concomitant longer effort.
  • Agreed - I vote for smoothing :)
  • I agree with you that it is not the same thing, but IMO the accuracy of this kind of GPS devices is not high enough. I mean than if you see in the screen an instant pace of 4:02 min/km, probably your real pace is between 4:00 min/km and 4:04 min/km so for me to show in the screen instant pace in steps of 5 s/km is a good trade-off. The same applies to a powermeter, which tipically has an accuracy of +/-2%
