Zumo 500 problem with power on

Former Member

my Son gave me a Zumo 500, with older maps on the device from 2008/2009

I've installed BaseCamp, and BaseCamp recognizes the device.

Various efferorts to try and install Garmin (non)Express has also failed: Win 8.11, Core i7 Lenovo W520 laptop with 8GB ram...

The problem I'm experiencing is with the Zumo 500.

I've installed the up-to-date maps thru BaseCamp:
Maps -> Install maps

Zumo is fitted with a 1GB SD memory card, that's been in the device from new (2008)
It then installed the maps to the device, but now I'm experiencing the following problem:

On power up with USB cable disconnected, the Zumo displays the startup screen, and then the copyroght info on the bottom of the screen, and then "loading maps" or message to that effect, and thenscreen goes blank.
If I press the power on button again, the same...

If I plug the USB cable in, it loops with the splash screen reverting to blank screen (black), etc.

What can I do to stop this looping, other than trashing it, which I'm considering at this stage...
