speed and elevation contains erroneous data when charted over distance (image inside)

My speed and elevation charts do not display correctly when charted over distance (see horizontal lines and/or straight vectors in below images). When I chart these data over TIME it looks okay, but when charted over DISTANCE i get this erroneous info.

This started about 2 weeks ago after an incident where my Garmin would not complete an update. The device seemingly froze during an update; after leaving the device plugged into my computer overnight I finally disconnected it from my computer even thought it said "do not disconnect". I figured if it couldn't complete the update overnight then it was never going to finish. After that incident, this problem began. :(

Does anyone know how I can fix this? I was very pleased with the performance of the Edge 500 for the last 9 months but this new problem is very irritating.
