Course Creator still broken after 2 years!

I am once again trying to plan a bike trip in Europe and creating courses for each day with the Garmin Connect website. I am extremely disappointed that I am running into the same defects that plagued me 3 years ago when trying to plan a similar trip in Europe.

When placing points on the map the route can not and will not stay on the road. Even when the "stay on road" option is selected. It would appear that this option is just there as a decoration. If you follow the link below and go to the course I have created you will see a prime example of this.

Since I have sent numerous requests to Garmin to fix this issue and still it is broken. I can only assume that Garmin doesn't care about fixing a clear defect or is simply incapable of fixing this defect.

I gave up on the sadly lacking user interface. Use Google Earth or Google Maps. There are ways then to convert the resulting file (kml,xml) to a file format that can be uploaded to Garmin connect as an activity (gpx,tcx). Then you save the fake activity as a course. Then you delete the fake activity but you still have a course that can be loaded on the device. There are many ways to do this. Earth and Maps have a far better user interface and ability to plan routes.

Your title is a bit misleading.

Looks like there's something particular to the map data for some of that road northeast of Bormio, Italy causing it to not be routable. If I try the other roads out of Bormio it seems to be fine for stay-on-road course creation, but that one road won't "take".

While I'm sure Garmin could potentially fix the map data, unless their map data supplier ALSO implements a fix it'll be gone at the next update. So while you're right to be frustrated, it's also probably not entirely in Garmin's sphere of control here either.

What was the response to your support tickets you sent to garmin previously?

I have exchanged numerous emails with them about this issue. If I zoom in and drag the route back to the road every few meters in some cases the route will get back on the road (most of the time). To add to this when using Google Maps there is an issue where it doesn't let you go through tunnels or avalanche tunnels and has even worse route drawing problems. I have repeatedly asked them to fix this issue and still the problem exists 2 years later.

Course using Google Maps. Even worse if you can imagine that. Oh and just in case anyone asks. I had "Stay on road" selected.

Since you mention Google Maps, check out maps.google.com -- https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Bormio+Sudovest,+Italy/Montechiaro,+Bolzano,+Italy/

Please change the route to follow the road you want and post the results.

As I suggested earlier it seems Google's map data is at fault since the same problem shows up completely independent of Garmin. Perhaps you might want to bring that up with Google. (yes ideally Garmin should have notified Google you raised it to their attention, but not being privy to your emailed conversations it's difficult to tell if anyone realized the map data at Google is at fault)

Yes, it doesn't seem like Course Creator is at fault, just the map.

Also fails at MapMyRide which as far as I know has nothing to do with Garmin.

Garmin Support could have handled the issue better (assuming it was described to them accurately). At some point the support ticket should have escalated high enough to reach someone knowledgable enough to discern the source of the issue.

Not sure what is going on with the Google Maps link you sent me, but it does have serious issues. I can't stand the new Google Maps interface and tool set, they broke a bunch of stuff and I am almost as fed up at them as I am at Garmin Connect. I started to create my routes in Strava now and it they seem to be working just fine. I might add Strava is using Google Maps. Done with Garmin Connect.

Yes I can't see that this is a Garmin issue - generally course creation works well
