How hard do you want it to be for us to create new posts? There's a big difference in complexity of a procedures needed to log into a website and post a message as opposed to getting your personal information. The spam spambots have been around almost as long as the internet.

Other forums might have more manpower available (usually volunteers at most forums). However I think the enormity of the number of users here on this forum ensures that there will be a significant number of users viewing the forum when the spam hits. Therefore more people see it before it gets cleaned up.

Yep, there were a lot this morning, I deleted those 21 pages once I was up, and seeing it was a Sunday that was later than normal :)

There are only a few mods (and as voiceresponse says some of us are volunteers) but we clear up where we can, plus there are Garmin staff who also do so. Spammers getting through doesn't impact on the security of your personal details.

Can we have some reassurance that our personal details are safe?

As mentioned, there's a substantial difference between creating a new login to post a bunch of threads and breaking into the databases to obtain other users profile data.

However, if concerned, then simply either don't provide any sensitive information or if something is required provide an incorrect answer. Just because there's a box with a label doesn't mean you have to put anything into it. For example my profile does not have my birthday or location, an I use a secondary spam-catcher email address to sign up for this sort of stuff.

Are there other personal details I'm missing? I suppose if someone cracked in and found your private run data they might figure out where you lived, but in the US there are so many public records containing your home address anyway that it's hardly a high value data element. I'm unsure about other nations and public records accessibility.

Not only would that utterly svck for any non-techie athletes who lived in India, but it'd also be pointless as it's trivial for a spammer to leverage a VPN service to have a non-Indian origination IP address.
