Inconsistency with Active Calories on the Reports section

I noticed yesterday that the Garmin calorie adjustment on MFP looked too high, so I checked the reports section of the Garmin connect website and there is an inconsistency between Active Calories.

If I look at the "All Activities" section then I see:

- Active Calories for Weds 14th Jan = 736 total ( 150 walking, 586 cycling )

- Total Calories for Weds 14th Jan = 1951 BMI + 864 active.

This is a differential of 128, and it appears the higher number is the one sent to MFP.

If I look at other days there are also inconsistencies, in fact for Tuesday 13th the disparity is over 300!

Is anyone else seeing this? Anyone know the reason behind this or if it is a bug? If it isn't correct its a massive problem for MFP users as it will mislead us in terms of calories burned etc.....

Thanks,
Paul

Many of the comments/suggestions we receive (such as yours) are often evaluated towards potential implementation into future Garmin products or current unit software releases. We cannot guarantee that what you have suggested will be implemented, however we do appreciate you passing along your opinions.

Turns out, despite that lame email that they sent you and despite the fact that they never responded to my email from the 27th at all, your original email did result in a case being opened on this in GB. My call this morning got a second case opened in the US. The US team also volunteered to respond to you directly via email.

In my rather substantial experience with these things, an "open case" really only serves as an acknowledgement that there is indeed a problem. Unfortunately, it is no assurance that the problem will be solved quickly (or even ever). I know it is a pain but I suggest you keep turning off activity tracking when recording an "Activity". You will get screwed out of some steps but it sounds like MFP fidelity is your primary objective anyway. Let us know if you actually hear from them.
  • Well I did get another email from Garmin Europe, in which they "take the piss" - this in response to me chasing the issue and giving more evidence of inconsistencies.

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for emailing Garmin Europe.
If calorie and activity data are not syncing between Garmin Connect and MyFitnessPal (MFP), please check the Garmin Connect status page first.
The status page will indicate if there are any specific connection issues with the Connect website and can be found at the following link: http://connect.garmin.com/status
If the Connect status page indicates that the MFP site connection is online, but you are still unable to sync calorie and activity data, please try the following steps to resolve the issue:
Note: Before following the steps below, please ensure that the Garmin Connect Mobile and MyFitnessPal apps are up-to-date in the Google Play Store and/or Apple App Store, respectively.
    1. Disconnect MyFitnessPal from Garmin Connect.
    • To disconnect MFP using the Garmin Connect Mobile app for Android or iOS:
    1. Select Menu (3 bars)
    2. Settings (gear icon)
    3. Privacy
    4. Select Disconnect from MyFitnessPal
    • To disconnect MFP using the Garmin Connect website (http://connect.garmin.com):
    1. Select Menu (3 bars)
    2. Calories in/out
    3. Select Disconnect from MyFitnessPal (small print at bottom of page)
Disconnect Garmin Connect from the MFP website (http://MyFitnessPal.com):
    1. Sign into the MFP account
    2. Select 'APPS' near the top of the page
    3. Select 'Garmin Connect Mobile' if it appears in the "Your Apps" section on the right side of the page
    4. Click the 'DISCONNECT' button
    Wait at least 15 minutes.
Reconnect the two accounts again using either the Garmin Connect Mobile app or Garmin Connect website:
Once the two accounts have been reconnected, return to the MFP website (http://MyFitnessPal.com).
Log in to the MFP site.
Click 'APPS' at the top of the page.
Look under the 'Your Apps' section on the right and verify that 'Garmin Connect Mobile' is listed.
Your data should now sync correctly between Garmin Connect and MyFitnessPal.
Please help us improve our service with a quick survey by clicking here.
If there’s anything else you need help with, please let me know.
    Kind Regards,
    Brandon

  • Btw I did a run this morning and only remembered to turn off activity tracking about 10 mins in which I did.

The result is a whopping great 1000+ calorie adjustment on MFP as well as the 1000 or so for the run.

    Sigh.
  • I don't even know where to start with the info on this grab from Connect.....although help getting the actual image to paste in this forum rather than just a link would be useful ;-)

  • It's torturous trying to get Garmin to acknowledge and understand this via email. Especially when it takes them 2-3 days to reply.

The hardware is great but if Apple Watch 2 or 3 gets its act together for example before Garmin get their software side sorted out they will have a problem.

It is a bit of a pain and I am sure there are other was to do it but here is what I do:

    1. I opened a free photobucket account just for this.

    2. Once I get an image the way I want it (I use various combinations of screen print, paintbrush, Windows snipping tool, and Photoshop Elements) I upload it to photobucket.

    3. After doing that, I select the image in photobucket and then click on the IMG Share Link which automatically copies it. Then I paste it into my entry via Ctrl V:
    " />">

That's all there is to it :).
  • Today (2015-03-10) is the first time that I've had an issue similar to those in this thread. I have a FR620 and a vivosmart. I have been wearing the vivosmart 24/7 (except for synching to GC via USB cable) since I received it as a gift in early January 2015. Before today, I have not had discrepancies in calories burned in GC (Garmin Connect) even though I wear both devices when I go for a run--at least one run was 12+ miles--but I do not use Activity Tracking on the vivosmart. It had appeared that GC recognized both devices referred to the same training data and used the FR620 calorie data. [I weigh daily and record it on GC; but, I had never synched my personal data to the devices since initially adding each to GC.]

I have my GC acct synched with MFP (MyFitnessPal.com) and the two (GC & MFP) exchange data appropriately...or did until today after synching my training run, when I noticed a huge discrepancy from all the previous days. So, I looked back at GC and saw that it shows my Active calories ("=Total Calories - BMR") includes the FR620 data and the vivosmart data (which includes a huge number of calories for today's run). The calories in MFP do not agree with the Active calories in GC.

Is the BMR calculated by vivosmart? Or, is there a setting to input those calories (BMR)? Am I supposed to synch my GC personal data to both devices (vivosmart daily, FR620 before a run/race)?

    Raymond
  • I have disconnected my Garmin Connect and MyFitnessPal accounts. Garmin have acknowledged the issue and say it will be looked at but will give no timeframe. I have no idea if they will even tell me/us when it is fixed.

Its a shame a fantastic watch like the 920XT can't be made to work seamlessly with MyFitnessPal but I'll just log the activities manually and calculate the steps calories at the end of each day from the watch.

    Sigh.
  • Bumping this on the off chance anyone cares ;-)

( Last word from Garmin was that it was not yet fixed )
