It happens to virtually every popular forum and some that aren't so well known. Many others just don't have the frequency of visits from valid users that Garmin Connect has. The volunteer moderators at those sites are able to get rid of it before a significant number of users see it.
I think its been hacked. I have popups all over the place. Nothing works.
I can't say I've had pop ups either.
I was thinking about the GC issues last night too, maybe Garmin just had a bumper Christmas (with so many affordable products like vivifits etc) then add the usual first week of January fitness kicks meant their servers became overloaded with all the extra data?
If you are getting pop-ups in the forum, you likely got virus. Unlikely that it was from the forum unless you went to one of the links in the spam messages. More likely a previous "bad" website or you opened an email attachment that was infected.

Over 10 months using GC, and never seen a single popup. Sounds like you might have something that needs to be looked at, virus or bot wise..... Some site have this "browser add-on" that is really just and add-bot. See what add-ons/extensions you have in your browser...
