My garmin 405 is giving a lot porblems from me charging it and the battery saying 100%.Then when i go for runs the watch blanks out also say battery low when its not.yesterday went for jog i thought its was working would not pick up a gps signals which always does it also cut out and back.i use Endomondo on my windows phone which work well but my phone is too big to jog with.i was looking into getting either the 610 or the 220.i need some opinions and reviews on them.some of the reviews i seen were from 2013 so i just want some up to date reviews and opinions.thanks in advance.
  • If I were choosing between the two I'd buy a $150 factory refurbished 610 with HRM3 strap from one of the Amazon.com sellers.

It really depends on your needs. In general though I'd encourage the 610 for the more technical runner and the 220 for the more social runner.

The 610 remains a very solid gps watch, and includes some capabilities not in the 220 despite its relative age. Off the top of my head the 610 allows: back-to-start navigation (handy if you travel for work), edit custom workouts on the watch itself, cycle mode (useful for non-running workouts even if you don't cycle), usable touchscreen (immune to water and works with gloves), Virtual Partner, Virtual Racer, and the ability to get current pace from a footpod while using GPS for track/distance (helps give a better current pace figure).

The 220 on the other hand can connect to your phone to transfer stuff, is smaller & lighter, and will likely see updates for a longer period since it's been out a bit over year.

Best thing is to go read the reviews at DCRainmaker.com and then look at the more recent comments on each review.

(and if you're not attached to Garmin, take a careful look at the Polar M400 but note that it doesn't have vibrate alert.)

thanks for the info. i think im leaning towards the 610.when you say technical or social?i go out and do 5miles 3-4times a week sometimes more miles depending on how i feel.am i consider social or more technical.thanks
  • I would go for the 610 I think it is a far more capable watch but make sure that you get the new premium HRM with it. If you want a good comparison of the two as gbp11 says above have a look at DCrainmaker's site he has used all these watches and has no axe to grind unlike most magazines etc.

    http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/11/garmin-forerunner-depth-review.html

The two big things it has that the 610 doesn't are

    - Bluetooth for connection to your phone
    - usb connection to a computer which is nice and simple to use.

I have a 610 and I upload to my mobile by plugging the ant stick in and using a third party app and use ant+ to transfer to computer - which for me works well.

Overall the 610 has more features to allow you to set up and monitor your workouts whereas the 220 is perhaps a little more user friendly but with less functions.

Thanks.I already have a hrm but the premium 1 sounds much beter than the 1 I have. I can do with out the usb connection prob would be easier because the wireless is a pain sometimes to sync.amazon drop the 220 by $25 its $224.00.close to the 610 but i will take the advice and roll with 610.can you tell me what third party app you use so i can try it also.
  • I use sport tablet uploader

    http://www.sportablet.com/mobile-garmin-uploader.html

It can be a little temperamental - seems to depend on the phone you use it with

Also you'll need an adaptor from your phone to usb you can pick them up for 3 or 4 gbp if you don't already have one
