A Few Thoughts on CES Announcments from Garmin Yesterday

Here's a few thoughts that I thought were important to share, in response to the announcements of new Garmin products yesterday.

  • There are no thoughts on the new products, just complaints about the current ones.
  • Rather than complain about the problems Garmin is having at the moment (and for days...), I know the new announcements have muddied the water for me. I was leaning toward the 920xt. Now, not so much. I have analysis paralysis going on so I'm just not buying anything and sticking with my 910xt for a while. There are so many new devices coming onto the market both from Garmin and other companies. While I love choice, not one of them is exactly what I am looking for so I guess I will just keep my money until the storm dies down.

What I would buy is a website or program that I can use to put info in from *any* device I choose to purchase. I want my steps and my activities in the same place. I want to be able to import any old workouts (like my Garmin activities since 2006). Everything in one place no matter the hardware.

Good comments; I think Apple's Healthkit is closing to providing that central gateway. Garmin Connect puts some basics there; and other apps do the same. Not withstanding Garmin's present challenges with poor product delivery and support; they understand the needs of athletes very well - I think they are just overcommitted and trying to do too much. It's a cycle of overcommitment and underperformance - the theme of the blog piece.

Yes! A website/program (preferably a program) for all my steps/activities/_health statistics_ and Yes, any type of hardware. The hardware part will be difficult as the hardware manufacturers like to use a proprietary file format to lock you into their hardware.
Oh, by the way, the website/program should be rock solid reliable!!
  • And the website MUST have the ability to back up your data to a location of your own choosing in a format that is readable by other applications!
