Elevation correction stopped working

Uploaded a hike today. Elevation correction was disabled (instead of enabled as it has been for some time).

I turned EC on, but it did not fix the elevation numbers.

In this hike, the elevation gain should be about 460ft, NOT 762 ft.

  • I have the exact same issue.
Elevation corrections are often way off. I have posted a few times here on the forum without getting any solution

Try to save your run as a course (gear-icon in the top right corner)
Check if this elevation graph looks more accurate. It does for me - which tells me that the data is correct, it's Garmin Connect that displays them wrong...

I see no difference wether EC is turned on or off

It seems like elevation correction is working but is always set to DISABLED... how do I make ENABLED the default ? I have an Edge 500.
  • If your device has a barometric altimeter, which the Edge 500 does, elevation corrections are disabled by default. The assumption is that a barometric altimeter is more accurate than the survey data.

If you wish to enable elevation corrections, you'll need to individually enable each activity.

I've done testing between Elevation Corrections Enabled, Disabled using GPS only, Disabled using Barometer, and using other sites/devices (Strava), and I got anywhere from 15-60% elevation variation on identical routes from these four methods. No two methods were even within 15% of each other over a 40-mile ride! Pretty discouraging.

The best way to use elevation data is to pick one method and stick with it. For me that is just use GC's Elevation Correction all the time, since creating Courses under Plan tab uses this. Use one and stick with it, at least that way you can cross-compared various rides with one another.
