Vivofit will not sync to my Mac

I received the Vivofit for Christmas and I can't get it to sync to my mac. I have held down the button as instructed the only thing that appears is the word pair. Also I don't think it gives an accurate reading of how many steps I have taken. I can move my arms just a little bit (I am not walking just sitting down) and it will register like 10 steps or more and when I do walk (I have counted) it will say I've done like 50 steps when really I've only done like 15. Not really liking this product maybe I should consider returning it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!:(
