Wish I could help. I am interested in being able to import gpx files, as the Garmin website and Garmin Connect both promised I could do before my very recent purchase of an Edge 500. But I stumbled on this thread and realized that if I could get Garmin Connect to EXPORT a course as a gpx then perhaps I could compare an exported file with one I am trying to import to see if I could spot a difference that might explain why I cannot import third party (RAGBRAI/GeoBike in my case) gpx files. No joy, when I try to export one of my courses using the instructions above I get:
HTTP Status 403 - You do not have sufficient privileges to view the activity with id 9155061.

So the export gpx instructions don't work for me either and the import gpx functions are also inoperative. In my case there are workarounds that do let me import the courses but I would gently suggest to Garmin that if one advertises gpx compatibility, one should deliver it. I am hoping to have a long and satisfying relationship with Garmin but this is not getting me off to a good start and I feel for you because you don't even have a workaround unless you can find a third party converter to convert fit files to gpx.
