I like the new feature where I can add shoes and track mileage. What I would really like to see added to that is the ability to add a b/fwd mileage balance so I can use the report from now on without having to mentally add pre-feature mileage or wade through my old exercises trying to remember what shoes I wore.
Yes, you need to add new gear with a first-use date sometime in the past and you can then select that gear for any activities since then. You can't use the gear before your first-use of course, so pay attention when you set that date.
At least thats how its working for me using Safari on my Mac or IE on my PC. Worked for two different pairs of shoes.
What I can't do however is change the first-use date after adding the shoes. Seems you have one shot, else you need to add a new pair and delete the old ones.
BTW, I have two active pairs of shoes. For any run since both first-use dates I can select either or both pairs of shoes.
For folks having issues, consider trying a different browser. Hopefully Garmin will get the issues settled in less time than it took to bring out the feature.
If you have gear that has been in use, why not set the "Max distance" (or what ever is used for things other than shoes), what you expect is still left? I have a pair of shoes that are getting old, and I set the "max distance" to 25 miles, and when it gets there, I'll retire them. And with the shoes that are replacing them, I got about 25 miles on them before "gear tracking" was available, and have set the "max distance" accordingly....
Why can't Garmin just get it right by adding a field with "Initial Distance" to a shoe? As if tracking gear until Garmin implemented the feature didn't exists and we have to start from scratch now.
If you know the Initial Distance, just subtract that from the "End of Life" distance. It will be the same net result. This problem will evaporate when everyone gets to retire all their old shoes, although that may take a while for some :).
I'm currently rotating through 3 shoes. I'm a relatively new runner and in the past have replaced shoes at 250 miles. I'm currently trying to see what life I can really get out of these shoes, so there is no end mileage.
The other scenario is if you may have an activity not recorded in Garmin Connect.
Garmin should just implement the ability to edit distances. These work arounds won't work for everyone.
In my case I'm just tracking the mileage on a chain on a bike which does have a max mileage. Garmin just needs to update the report to show the accumulated mileage on a piece of gear whether it has a max or not.
