Gear Feature

I like the new feature where I can add shoes and track mileage. What I would really like to see added to that is the ability to add a b/fwd mileage balance so I can use the report from now on without having to mentally add pre-feature mileage or wade through my old exercises trying to remember what shoes I wore.
  • At last, how long has this feature been requested?

At least since July 2009 by what I've seen. So only five and a half years... ;)

Alleluja, but this feature still need some work. Can we add shoes that already had some use?

Indeed, it does need refinement. Especially a freeform notes field to at least keep track of purchase date / price / etc for shoes. Still, I'd rather have it in its current state than NOT have it at all!

As for adding with some use either note the starting mileage in the nickname, or perhaps reduce estimated mileage lifetime by the starting mileage.

What I did, since I started a new pair just recently and keep my prior pair as a backup was this: I first added my old shoes with the start date of the first run I'd made with them five months ago, selected to add them to all runs since then, and saved. I then added the brand new shoes and did the same. That left me with a few runs with two pairs of shoes marked; I went to each activity and deleted the shoe entry for the old shoes for that activity. I had under ten activities so it wasn't a big deal.
  • I'm really glad that this feature has been added to Connect. I've been tracking my shoes by using a combination of notes on the calendar to track the start and end date along with "Event Type" for different shoes. One pair is "Geocaching", another is "Touring", and so on.

I do wish that on the gear page, when you click to view the activities for the piece of gear, that list was either automatically sorted by date or that the list is capable of sorting by clicking different column headings in the list (Just like you can do on the "Reports" or "Activities" pages). Right now there is no rhyme or reason to how the list is ordered.

Click here to see how the list isn't ordered:

I noticed that the list updates and adds more activities as you scroll to the bottom. That might cause a problem with dynamically sorting by clicking on the columns, but I think sorting the list makes it much easier to find items that are on, or not on the list.

It might also be nice to have a button that one could click to see gearless activities to help people assign the correct gear to the activity. I set up a shoe called "Unknown" as my default shoe for running. All of my runs will be marked with that so that I know which activities have not been assigned a shoe. I assigned it a "Max Distance" of 1 mile, so that every new activity will cause progress bar of the shoe to turn red and attract my attention to the unassigned activities.

For my main road running shoes I went back and included previous runs to get the milage close. It took 3 tries but I'm satisfied. I have a pair of trail running shoes and backup road shoes that I can't figure a way to add the milage to. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this (besides lowering the max milage or buying new shoes)? Seems like an oversight to start something without offering a way to back date info it.

I guess if nothing else it will be non issue in a few months from now.

Does anyone have the email to feedback on garmin connect. If you accidentally set up some gear from the wrong date, you can't edit it, so, if like me, you've put a bike in from 2014, you can' t add it to an activity in 2012.

    :-(
  • Finally but lacking. Does garmin really believe we only own ONE pair of shoes for any given activity? I have used Running-log.com to track my mileage on shoes and will continue to do so until Garmin updates this.

Just found a way to edit it, all good now :-)
  • Hi,
Sorry I must have miss something but I can not assign a gear to a previous session. I managed to create different shoes. Then when I enter an old activity, I click on "add" gear and everytime I get a popup complaining that "No gear available". What is wrong?

Also when I try to add the maximum mileage for a shoes, I can not edit the field with number, I can only type somme letters. Looks like an issue with my browser and garmin connect (I am using safari under macos). Thanks much for your support.

I think you have to choose a date in the past for when you "got the gear" or first activity, otherwise that "gear" will not be shown as an option before that date.

Sadly, that date isn't currently editable.

    How did you manage that?
