GPX Activities uploaded no longer have length/distance

Since the Garmin Connect website downtime yesterday (12/19/14), GPX file uploaded as activities no longer interpret the correct mileage length, or associated calculations. Time and elevation appear to be known, but not distance.

Anyone else see this?

Thanks
  • Nice. But to late. I just ordered a Polar M400 and created a Polar Flow account. My Forerunner 210 will be on ebay soon.
Sorry, I really liked GC, but in the last months it was only annoying. I own an Edge 500, a Oregon600 and will still use them, but not data will go to GC anymore. Strava and Flow will do.
  • For those who've not seen - a header has been added to the GC website, as below.

  • Also - I know I may cop some heat for this - but folks, this is a free service Garmin offers. I've dabbled with all manner of GPS/running websites and apps - miCoach, Nike+, Strava, RunKeeper, endomondo - Garmin is by far my favourite and when it works, it works great for me.

While it is rather frustrating to not be able to get my stats on a couple of runs, I also understand it's a very busy time of year for everyone (that includes the folks on the other end of this forum). They say patience is a virtue - this issue will be fixed in time. Those who are off to other providers, good for you, I hope they have all you're looking for. But let's be honest with ourselves, this isn't that dramatic of an issue, no one died.

You're right. This is a free service and we should be a bit patient.

In fact I've tried Strava yesterday using the tapiriik.com service to migrate. Migration worked fine but several activities were not uploaded to Strava. Probably because those categories don't exist in this website (kayak, paddling, mountaineering, ...). But what I miss more from GC is the ability to summarize times or distances from an arbitrary period of time. For instance: how many kilometers have I done with my bike since the last maintenance?

In short ... Garmin Connect is cool. To be honest, it was cooler than Strava when it worked.

So, Garmin team: repair Connect and have in mind your customers that do not own the latest devices. I have an Oregon 450 and a Forerunner 305, both working really fine but none of them are recognized by Garmin Express and return 0 Km. distance when uploading tracks to Connect.

Glad I found this thread as I thought my Oregon 450 was faulty. I look forward to the fix
  • Latest email from GC Support;

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to assist you with this. GPX files not uploading correctly is a known issue on Garmin Connect. Our Garmin Connect team is working to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, I do not have a definite time frame for when this will be resolved.

Lots of statistics for Strava is done white the site veloviewer.com. In fact it's a useful addition to Strava. Check it out. (But as far as I know only cycling and running is supported, but I might be wrong.)

Yes ... Garmin Connect was a cool site. But somehow they messed it up. Maybe I'll come back later... I once dumped Polar for not supporting Macs and went to Garmin .... now, for my running activities, I went back to Polar (cycling still on Garmin). Maybe I'll come back to Garmin in the future ... But with all those web portals (GC, Polar Flow, Strava ...) only Strava seems to be the one who collects my data well regardless of the device I'm using.
  • GPX uploads still reporting wrong distance.

The perception that users should accept and endure buggy / unstable software (or a platform) from a $9,8B corporation just because it is free is totally flawed IMHO. The supplied software environment is most likely a strategic part (amongst other) of giving a supplier the 'competitive edge' and I think it is naive to think Garmin's approach is - "Oh we are your friends and we will be nice and give you a free platform". The platform is part of a 360 deg solution to support their sales. It also serves as an ideal 'showcase' of what the company is able to do. (Bragging rights.) Sadly Garmin is missing this point again and again. To disregard the importance of a professional and well managed platform (even when free) is WRONG in this day and age, and it should be treated as any other 'paid for' app - your product reflects who you are.

I also think the IT manager responsible for this platform should realise that he is responsible for delivering a poorly executed and substandard solution as it stands at the moment. It is quite a bad reflection on Garmin's IT's dept capabilities and also on the company's brand and image, what they stand for and what they try to accomplish. The moment you put something out there it should be handled professionally and with meticulous care and it doesn't matter at all if it is free or not, as your brand values are at stake here. BTW - Imagine the brand and reputational damage if say Apple had the same approach to their own software and their app store's free apps. (Even free apps go through the same VERY rigorous testing process as the 'paid-for' apps when you submit an app to Apple and there isn't a two tier approach - as their branding and what they stand for is very precious and valuable to them. )

Go and read Garmin's mission statement, I don't see any exclusion of any product or service, free or not? In fact, I see quite some room for improvement!

This is a debate for another thread perhaps.

BTW Garmin reported a profit of $182 million Sept 2014 according to WSJ. That is from sales to us, their customers.

The automotive and mobile segment posted a 2% sales increase, while the outdoor business's sales declined 1%. Fitness sales soared 79%, and marine sales edged up 1%. Aviation sales grew 11%

Back to the topic : the uploads are still not working even thought the status dashboard reports a green for it (facepalm) . Three weeks has come and gone, how long still Garmin?

Is it free? As someone else mentioned, the availability of Garmin Connect and facilities to sync my data with it is something that encouraged me to buy Garmin products (Edge 500, VIRB Elite, HRM etc). If it hadn't been available I may have bought those items from elsewhere. Yes, you can sync the data with other websites (automatically in a lot of cases, including Strava) but I still expect Garmin to continue to provide Connect with a reasonable level of service. What they could consider is looking at a standard/premium model where purchase of a device gives you access to certain functionality and you can get extras by paying but they've chosen not to do that yet (as far as I can see) so I don't think it's unreasonable to expect Connect to just work!
  • I've tried it just now and it's not working too for me... This is ridiculous.
