How Do I Turn Off Auto-Naming Of Activities?

I don't like it.
  • It seems that the scheme is <Location> <ActivityType>. Even if the location is unspecified or incorrect it is still not meaningless. Inaccurate maybe, but certainly not meaningless. It seems that in most cases it is better than the previous behavior of using Untitled as the activity name.

That said, there is no option to disable the automatic naming.

Also, even if the name is wrong, it's just as easy to change as "untitled" was....

BTW, is your location correct in your Garmin Connect Profile? There a few places that GC could be looking at to find your location. 1) your profile 2)The location based on GPS for activites that use that function, or 3) your network location (which is often based on the location for the ISP that you connect to when syncing.) Well, or 4) Some random place that was in the buffer when it looked up someone else's location :)

The auto-naming is incorrect for me in all cases! It never got the correct area right, it's always off by 10-20km.

I tried changing the name to "Untitled" but looks like if you do that it immediately changes to the auto-generated name. If you change it to just blank then it stays blank.

I much preferred the "Untitled" naming because then I would give names to only special tracks and could easily recognize them among the untitleds. I definitely need an option to turn the auto naming off.

Is anyone from Garmin actually reading this?
  • is there a way to ask Garmin directly about this or do we just post here and hope they read it? I don't mind it generating a name but one that's totally irrelevant to me is pointless, how are the names chosen? Why don't they let the user pick a default name as most people probably run in the same area regularly or better still just put it back to untitled and let us change them ourselves, its just annoying as it means i now have to rename every run where as previously i only renamed races.

Actually I've just checked Strava, it has auto naming but it manages to get the right location! no excuse for garmin getting this wrong.
  • Useless! And there is a reason to have it removed. When using "copy my sports" the exporting starts if the activity has a name. In other words... Before I had time to shower before correcting the activity.

Yes sorry , is unspecified or incorrect.
But come on! Garmin is GPSs and MAPs , i was running in the downtown of Buenos Aires, around 3 of the most famous places in Buenos Aires, and the autonaming gave the name of a neighborhood where you CAN'T go for a run unless you wanna be robed.
Today i run near the biggest green area in the city, and it continues naming the activity with this incorrect neighborhood name..

So you'd be perfectly happy if the auto-naming continued provided that it accurately determined the name of the area that you were when you started recording your activity?
  • I'm sorry, but I have to have a quiet chuckle here. For years, people have been complaining that all uploads were 'Untitled' which meant a title had to be provided later. For years, people whinged about the process and petitioned Garmin to do something about it. They have. But it's not perfect likely due to local GIS information being adrift and maybe too, because we think we are somewhere else. But as noted, it's a simple fix - change the information after.

FWIW, I swim at East Pier but my location is uploaded as Ahuriri. I run in Eskdale MTB Park but according to Garmin it's Petane - didn't even know it existed! So, get over it and make the changes if you want to in the meantime.

At the same time, contact Garmin Connect support and pass the information on to them. They can only work of the recorded GPS information and place the locations accordingly.
  • i also dont like it, its was easier to spot 'untitled' activities, please bring it back or give us the option of removing it

    Exactly!
